Of course there are some favorites of mine from college football that don't actually play the game but contribute mightily to game day atmosphere!! :)

TOK, I was 9 when Huarte won the Heisman. My Dad, who did not go to college, became a ND fan during the Leahy era and admired Ara. Being of Croatian ancestry, you would think he would have liked Kuharich but ethnic loyalties only go so far. I rememeber listening with him on my Philco transistor radio when USC ruined ND's chance for an undefeated season.

BT, I was waiting for you to list Mike Lantry as one of your all time favorites....

Let me add Vince Young, Babe Pirilli, Roger Stabach, Charles Woodson and Herschel Walker.

    I think that is eleven

    Peyton Manning Tennessee

George Mira and/or Bernie Kosar Miami QB's

    Johnny Rogers Nebraska

    Archie Griffin Ohio state

    Earl Campbell Texas

    Vince Young Texas

    Mike Garrett USC

    Roger Stabach

    Charles Woodson

    Herschel Walker

    Babe Parilli
    QB Kentucky under Bear Bryant

I probably didn't fulfill all the criteria as to conferences but this is the best I can do. And it is really slanted to the offensive side of the ball.

I have fond memories of some of Lantry's best moments - both 73 and 74......I too was at the '74 game in the 'Shoe - field seats on the track at the closed-end goal line. If memory serves, that was the end into which his ill-fated effort to win the game at the gun fizzled.....the only way I could tell if it was successful was to listen.....wide left!

The Dead Schembechler's made him famous by penning this lyrical masterpiece....

I am really surprised that I'm the only person to mention Vick. I understand Terry's reasoning that he doesn't like him as a person but as a college football player I think he was one of the most (if not THE most) dynamic playmaker of the last decade in college football. Maybe not many people saw him play as much and can't remember how electric he was with the ball in his hands. Whether he was reversing field to score 75 yards touchdowns on the ground or using his arm strength to fling the football for 60 yard bombs, he was a great college player. His affinity for pitbulls and his success (or lack thereof) in the NFL is a different subject.

    Aquila,

you make a good point....he was a phenomenal college football player. The game he played -v- FSU in the title game was one of the greatest performances I've ever seen....he almost single-handedly carried the Hokies to the title. That said, I can't help but having very negative thoughts when I think of Vick. But, as a college football player, he was special.....

I found it difficult to make my list because I wanted to have some defensive players on it. For some reason I didn't get to see Vick play that much but remember how he got his team to the title game vs FSU. I would put him behind Vince Young however only because VY beat what everyone thought was an unbeatable team.

    Aquilla,
I think when you can only name 10, the selectors age is a huge factor. For example you have probably never heard of Leroy Keyes.
