Didn't play for your team. Name your top 10. The Rules are

    1. You can't name anybody who played or plays for your team(s). Example Stu can't name a Purdue or Ohio State player, I can't name a Texas or Notre Dame player, Corey can't name a Notre Dame or UCLA player.

    2. You have to have seen them play on TV or in person, ergo none of us can name the Gipper, or Charlie Choo Choo Justice, etc.

    3. You have to name at least 1 player from each of the 5 BCS conferences and 1 player from the MWC, CUSA, Notre Dame, WAC (combined, not a MWC player a ND Player, a WAC player, just 1 guy from those 3) conferences.

    4. You don't have to list them from #1 to #10, just what ever 10 you really like to watch play.

    I'll Start.

    1. Eric Crouch QB , Neb ...that kid was an exciting player and I loved the style of offense that they ran.

    2. Dee Dowis QB, Air Force....same reason as Eric Crouch

    3. Beau Morgan QB, Air Force ....same reason as Crouch and Dowis.

    4. Danny Weurfel QB, UF .... I don't think I've ever seen a QB excute the fade route in the endzone like Weurfel

    5. Pat White QB, WVA ...seeing a pattern here?

    6. Julius Peppers DE , UNC ....awesome player, glad I didn't have to block him. Funny thing is I don't really remember L.T. as a college player.

    7. The Big Kat (Andy Katzenmoyer) LB, Ohio State....Great College player, loved his nick name!

    8. O.J. Simpson RB, USC ...can't believe I'm putting him on my list but before he murdered his ex-wife, I considered him the best running back I'd ever seen play. He was something else to watch.

    9. Steve Walsh QB, Miami ...that guy was scary good as a college QB, never seemed to miss a throw. But didn't have the arm for the NFL.

    10. Darren McFadden RB, Ark....You never knew what was going to happen next, plus when they put him in that Wild Hog formation it was just pure excitement.

OK how about you guys? It was tough to come up with just 10 and I naturally tended to think of more recent players.

Roger Staubach-with him, Navy beating ND was no big deal
    Hershel Walker-awesome.
Barry Sanders-They had him running back KOs.
Leroy Keys-played both ways. Purdue was one tough team and he was a big reason
John Elway-If only the tuba player had made the tackle he would have won his last game.
George Webster MSU rover back. The heart of an awsome defense.
Doug Flutie-anyone who can stick a dagger in the heart of Miami like that is OK with me.
    Leroy Selman. Great Okie defender
Tony Dorsett. Damn, ND could contain OJ, Dorsett just killed us.
    Deion Sanders-neon.

Can't take the time now to name my top 10 because of a family holiday gathering, but I'll be back later. I just wanted to say that I find it interesting that Gip and I have 4 players in common on our list.....Leroy Keys, George Webster, Roger Staubach and Tony Dorsett.

I don't have time to ponder all 10 right now as my daughter and her family are getting ready to leave tomorrow morning.

But I'll start with a couple that I reserve the right to change.

Peyton Manning QB Tennessee. I was sure glad when he graduated and moved to the pros. He's a class act and I love his commercials now that he's in the NFL.

George Mira QB Miami. Very exciting player. If I remember right he beat the Gators in a game where he threw a touchdown with his left hand to beat the Gators. He was right handed.

I'll ask a question before listing the rest of my players, did I have to see them while they played in college or is having watched them in the NFL enough?

This is only about their college careers. If they became great pros or were terrific flops in the NFL it would not matter. For example there is hardly a bigger flop than Ryan Leaf, but if you thought he was one of the most exciting players you saw in college then he's on the list.

I'd forgotten about Leroy Keyes, he was a great great player either as a RB or a DB. Haven't been many who were as talented at both offense and defense.

As to Earl Campbell he had an incredibly exciting Sr. year when Fred Akers ditched the outdated Wishbone and went to the I formation. He was a great WB FB but that position sort of stunted him showing his talent. Similar to Jerome Bettis being played mostly at FB by Lou Holtz, he was great and when Lou put him at TB like he did against UF you could see how great he was, very nimble for such a big man.

I'm sort of surprised that you guys took George Webster over Bubba Smith. Any particular reason? Webster of course played for the old Houston Oilers and had a great start to his career but it was shortened by injuries and he never reached his promise. He died last year, his years after football were not very good as you can see by this article in the NYT.

    George Webster

Have to agree with Johnny Rodgers to be sure.

Earl Campbell was a pleasure to watch when he was with the Oilers and I don't recall much of his Texas days.

It's pretty hard to come up with just 10 on a list like this.

Just a note, my pool of players to draw from is going to be considerably smaller than for most of you as I’m a bit younger. I wish I could have seen guys the caliber of Bo Jackson, Herschel Walker, and Barry Sanders play college football. That’s not even mentioning some of the all-time greats of the 50s, 60s, and 70s. However, I did not start following college football closely until about the mid 90s (I was born in ’82). That being said, here’s my list, by conference affiliation. I’m combining the ACC and Big East since one of the players I’m mentioning played for Virginia Tech while they were still a member of the Big East. By the way, I can’t believe no one mentioned this guy even though he’s turned out to be a jerk.

ACC/Big East-Michael Vick (VT), Anthony Poindexter (UVa)
Honorable Mention: FSU-Peter Warrick, Chris Weinke Miami-Willis McGahee, Ed Reed UVA- Thomas Jones, Tiki Barber, Julius Peppers (UNC), Clemson- James Davis, C.J. Spiller, Woody Dantzler, Joe Hamilton (GT), Bryan Randall (VT) WVA-Pat White, Steve Slaton, Amos Zereoue Pitt-Larry Fitzgerald

Big 12-Vince Young (Texas), Ricky Williams (Texas)
Hon. Mention: Oklahoma-Adrian Peterson, Jason White Nebraska- Tommie Frazier, Lawrence Phillips, Joel Mackovica, Ahman Green, Eric Crouch, and Scott Frost, Byron Hanspard (Texas Tech), Troy Davis (ISU), Texas-Major Applewhite, Roy Williams

    Big Ten-Lavar Arrington (Penn St.)
Hon. Mention: Ohio State-Eddie George, Troy Smith, Penn St.-Curtis Enis, Larry Johnson Wisconsin-Ron Dayne MSU-Charles Rogers Michigan-Charles Woodson, Braylon Edwards

    Pac-10-Reggie Bush (USC)
    Hon. Mention-USC-Matt Leinart UCLA-Cade McNown WSU-Ryan Leaf, ASU-Jake Plummer

SEC-Champ Bailey (UGa), Tim Tebow (UF), Darren McFadden (Arkansas)
Hon. Mention-AU-Takeo Spikes, Cadillac Williams, Ronnie Brown Florida-Danny Wuerffel, Percy Harvin, Jevon Kearse LSU-Cecil Collins, Kevin Faulk, Laron Landry, Jamarcus Russel Bama-Shaun Alexander UGa-Quincy Carter Ole Miss-Deuce McAllister, Eli Manning UK-Lorenzen, Couch

    Notre Dame/Mid Majors-Jeff Samardzija (ND)
Hon. Mention-ND-Brady Quinn, Tom Zbikowski Marshall-Byron Leftwich, Randy Moss, Chad Pennington

I think I have too much time on my hands today but there’s my list. It’s really hard to trim it to ten which is why I have the honorable mentions included on my list.

Good list Aquila, I'd forgotten about Cade McNown he was exciting in a Riverboat gambler sort of way. I was suprised he didn't make it in the NFL.

I'd have put Michael Vick on my list but I just don't like him.

Bobda... I'm suprised you put John Huarte on your list, you'd have had to be pretty young when he was playing at ND. Did you mean to put Terry Hanratty?

I forgot one of my favorites that Bob had included on his list-Donovan McNabb, Syracuse.

Great topic, by the way, Terry to get us away from the "my conference is better than your conference" debates.

....in truth I would have put Charles Woodson on my list but I just couldn't go there.....but he was one scary good football player independent of his obvious shortcomings.
