Well, I now work for the US Army at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville Alabama. This puts us much closer to kids and grandkids and of course this is God's country, er I mean this sure is a terrible place to live and I would not recommend it to anyone....else.
kp, I love the Huntsville area. After my mother died, my dad had a lady friend who lived in Indy but was from Huntsville. He would go down there with her for a few months each winter. This happened for a few years before she succumbed to cancer. I would drive down in the early spring to stay a couple of days and bring him back to Indy. I really enjoyed my visits. I'll never forget traveling out to the countryside and stopping at a barbeque place where they had a huge oven and served great barbeque. That's where I learned to eat it with cole slaw on top. We never visited the space center. I would like to do that sometime after I retire (late next year).
Sid, That restaurant for bbq, was that in Huntsville? I go there quite a few times a year and search for new restaurants wehn I'm there. KP....You ever been to G's family restaurant in Huntsville? My boss took me there a few weeks ago, amazing! A hole in the wall joint but had the best fried corn and pork chops. You involved with logistics? I work at CECOM up in Jersey. Congrats on the new job.
nd, It was way out in the country. It's been a while so I couldn't begin remember where it is. But there is so much good food around that town, as you already have discovered, that there has to be a great barbeque place either in or within a stone's throw of the city.
I've stayed at a lot of Marriotts in my time. Usually one side of the hotel has a better vier such as "ocean view", "lake view", etc. Huntsville is the only hotel I stayed at that had rooms labled "rocket view." They overlooked a collection of different rockets that they have down there. I also decided to play on of the "Jones Trail" courses down there. Used rental clubs and bought one sleve of balls. Ran out on the 7th hole and drove in and left. Embarassing.
I've always wanted to do the Robt Trent Jones Trail in Alabama. I've known several guys who have done it, flew to 'Bama rented a Suburban with some buddies and spent week playing the trail. I've played one course in the Louisiana Audubon Trail, it was in St. Francisville (a little north of Baton Rouge) in the heart of the old plantation country. Really enjoyed it. Terry
sweet jesus kp <t>first round is on me. when are you free?<br/> <br/> you're an hour and 15 via hwy 20 or rte 72 from me.<br/> <br/> you are 15 minutes from Carson and Des.<br/> <br/> Welcome home!</t>
btw <r>You are aware there is a Dreamland BBQ in Huntsville now, right? You will weigh 500lbs by Christmas.<br/> <br/> I also highly recommend Tim's Cajun Kitchen (if Cajun is your kinda thing) on Jordan Lane. Any place that greets you with 3 side by side beer coolers can't be that bad of a place. Grab 2 on the way in, you'll need em.<br/> <br/> There is a Ruth's Chris downtown now, which of course doesn't suck.<br/> <br/> Handy fest is in July here in Florence as well as all of the other summer festivals, parties etc (Keller festival always sounds like it would be more fun than it is).. Some of these cities are changing and growing rapidly as some of the old alcohol and zoning laws are eased..You'd be surprised.<br/> <br/> Oh yeah, I am sure you've already spotted the Hooters... <E></E></r>
G's family restaurant is the best. I loved the food, my boss and I were talking to this guy for a while....Then when we leave he tells me he is the owner and his past......Police raid with a lot of drugs and 100k in cash in the back....but the guy made a mean dinner...ha Tim's cajun...I am there in a couple weeks....
Hooters?? pshaw... You need to see if Bone Daddy's has made it to your neighborhood yet. The food is pretty good, but it's the talent that keeps the guys coming back! 8)
ndfan77, I haven't been to G's..yet but I will find it. I am working for PMATC and so yes I will have dealings with CECOM and our office does have an item manager (I think the Army calls them that) up there. After 35 yrs either in the Navy or working for them as a civilian this first week has been a steep learning curve.
Thanks y'all <t>Sid, <br/> You are right. I love good bbq and there are all kinds of joints all over the place. Right now I am staying out in a little town outside of Decatur (Priceville) and there are at least 5 withing a 20 minute drive. The Pig Stand on Highway 31 is good and there is a place in Madison that is good but I can't remember the name.<br/> <br/> Corey, <br/> Thanks, you know after so many years away (left Birmingham in 1973) in the Navy, I forgot how comfortable I was in the deep south. I am very happy to be back. My wife is in Montgomery for the month of July and so I am going down there every weekend, but I will pm you later and we can get together. <br/> <br/> Terry,<br/> ...but how about Ala/Mex? I think that menu includes southern fried refried beans and cole slaw.</t>
a little bit for everyone <r>ndfan77,<br/> <br/> You will love Tim's Cajun Kitchen because their owner was busted on drug charges in the last year.<br/> <br/> <URL url="http://www.whnt.com/Global/story.asp?S=7690777"><s></s>http://www.whnt.com/Global/story.asp?S=7690777<e></e></URL><br/> <br/> Terry,<br/> <br/> Actually, all we have here in Tex/Mex variety food. Its called "Mexican" but its Tex-Mex.. Even the generic chain restaurants like Rosie's are watered down "tex-mex".. I have yet to find Mexican food ala Baja California or Sur Mexico anywhere east of Nevada... its not bad, it just is what it is.<br/> <br/> Scott,<br/> <br/> This is Alabama.. Like Texas, talent is found everywhere.<br/> <br/> KP,<br/> <br/> Just let me know</r>
Best breakfasts I ever had were at Eunice's, which I'm pretty sure has been closed for several years.
Hey <r>Sid,<br/> <br/> I think you will find a pleasant surprise when you return to Huntsville.<br/> <br/> <URL url="http://huntsville.about.com/library/weekly/aa090600a.htm"><s></s><LINK_TEXT text="http://huntsvi...m/library/weekly/aa090600a.htm</LINK_TEXT><e></e></URL></r>
Wow! Corey, you made my day! Thanks for going to the trouble. She was mugged not long after my Dad's friend died. Somehow I was under the impression that the restaurant closed in the aftermath of the mugging. Maybe it closed temporarily and re-opened when she was back on her feet. I look forward to getting back there sometime in the no-too-distant future, Maybe I can meet you and kp there for breakfast. By the way, I am a member of the Liar's Club. I have a certificate to prove it. Again, Corey, thanks.
Most people who really know Mexican Food are leery of any establishment that is not in Calif, Arizon, New Mexico or Texas. All of which have different styles of Mexican Food, but they are all great.
