Sort of pales to USC 86 Men's Nat'l Championships 22 Womens Nat'l Championships. And to UCLA 71 Men's Nat'l Championships 32 Women's Nat'l Championships
Those are huge numbers Terry by comparison. I wonder if the same comparison is being drawn by Wikipedia because I don't have the specifics. Hmmm...LA looks to be a strong contender but look out the Celtics are about to add another feather in Boston's cap.
L.A. is "College Titletown" Everyone knows Green Bay is "Titletown". Maybe Gainesville can be "Florida Titletown". That still makes you the king everywhere you go. 8)
Obviously the reason Gainesville has made ESPN's finalist list is because the men's basketball and football teams did something that no other school is likely to ever repeat: Back to Back to Back titles. Let's see any other school ever get close to that one. 8)
I got those numbers by looking up USC Athletics and UCLA Athletics in wikipedia. While I don't know, I wonder if either Texas or USC has won the Football/Baseball duo multiple times?
Bet you didn't know that before there was a NCAA or a NIT basketball tournament, that Notre Dame won 2 nat'l championships in basketball(1927 and 1936). The Helms Foundation was the "offical" declarer of Nat'l Champions before the days of the tournament.
Rick, In NCAA history no school has ever won the men's BB title and football title in the same year......much less turn around and then win the BB again the following year. There may be back to back titles in one sport or the other but not likely will there be titles in both sports in the same year. Even back-to-back titles in the same sport is pretty rare as UF was the first in BB since Duke in the early 90s to pull it off.
Yeah, I understand there was a time when no one thought a human could run a sub-four minute mile either. And no team had ever defeated three #1 seeds in the NCAA Basketball Tournament on the way to the National Championship until 1997, but now that's been done, too. Certainly accomplishments of this sort can be anomalous, but it's no more than posturing to say they're unlikely to be repeated until they've stood for a period of time, like Joe DiMaggio and his 56-game hitting streak (not to mention his 61-game hitting streak in the PCL). When I think of something that no other school is "ever likely to repeat", I think more of back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back national championships in a major sport. Now, that's a feat.
Did not know that. Wow! Twice in his career at the two highest levels in baseball. What an amazing feat. Hmmm. Let me see. Does it begin with a U and end with a CLA?
Actually, it begins with an"F" and ends with "UCLA" And here's a link to DiMaggio’s 61-game PCL hitting streak.
Speaking of The Yankee Clipper...am I the only one on this forum to have seen him play ( many times) in person?
That truly was remakable but it was 40 years ago and times have dramatically changed in NCAA BB. Wooden didn't have to worry about losing sophomores to be to the NBA so what Florida accomplished with juniors dominating the roster is even more unlikely to happen in the future.
Wooden also didn't have the luxury of playing freshmen as I recall. Players only had three years of eligibility through most if not all of that streak. Lew Alcindor played on the freshman team even though he was better than anyone. The UCLA streak makes UF's pale in comparision.
Only you would denigrate the greatest record by far in college sports. I would say it's unbelievable but where you are concerned nothing is out of bounds for your strangely antagonistic attitude.
oh jeez <t>the greatest basketball coach in the history of the entire southeastern united states, let alone SEC, is Adolph Rupp. How many times did he even come close to duplicating what Wooden did at UCLA?

UCLA's string was broken only by the 1966 UTEP miracle season. Prior to that, UCLA had won back to back NCAA championships.. (Oregon State won the Pac8 that season) then UCLA dropped 8 straight national titles on the world of college basketball... 8 in a row and 10 in 11 years. How in the world can you possibly take a shot at that?

UF's back to back was special, but no more special then:

Duke (91-92)
Cincinnati (61-62)
Oklahoma State (45-46)
San Francisco (55-56)

Its something special to be sure. Think of the great college programs NOT listed above!! But why try to establish your team's feat as some supreme event?!?

Stop compensating.</t>
I've always thought that John Wooden is the greatest coach of all time, in any sport or at any level. He achieved his unparalelled success with all types of teams, young or veteran, short or tall, transistion or half-court styles. And his players absolutely worship him to this day.
Put this in the "did you know" category.....the great Baron, Adolph Rupp was my great-uncle. My mom's uncle.....a nasty ,cranky cantekerous SOB to be certain, but Uncle Adolph nonetheless....! 8)
