UF player used credit card of dead girl for 6 months By Kevin Brockway Sun sports writer While University of Florida football player Jamar Hornsby appeared via closed circuit television from the Alachua County Jail, his attorney, Huntley Johnson, lower right, and Alachua County Detective Sandra Myers appeared in person before Judge William E. Davis, not pictured. Karen Voyles/The Gainesville Sun Florida safety Jamar Hornsby was released on his own recognizance Friday morning after turning himself in hours earlier on felony charges of credit card theft and fraudulent use of a credit card. Hornsby, 21, allegedly charged close to $3,000 on a credit card issued to Ashley Slonina, a University of Florida student who died in an October 2007 motorcycle accident in which walk-on UF football player, Michael Guilford, also was killed. The card abuse began on Oct. 13, 2007, the day after Slonina's death, according to court records and involved a BP gas card. According to Alachua County Sheriff's Authorities, Hornsby made 70 charges — 33 in Alachua County and 37 in Duval County. Authorities were first alerted of the credit card fraud after Slonina's family noticed charges on the fleet card they could not explain. Hornsby made his first court appearance at 9 a.m. Friday and was released at 9:30 a.m. He was given a curfew of 9 p.m. to 6 p.m. by Judge William E. Davis in Alachua County Court. Hornsby, a redshirt freshman from Jacksonville, appeared in eight games for Florida last season, recording five tackles. It's not Hornsby's first brush with the law. In April of 2007, Hornsby was cited on a misdemeanor criminal mischief charges when the tossed a man on a hood of a car during a fight, causing about $750 in damages. Hornsby remains on a deferred prosecution agreement from the charges, in which he must pay back the damages, pay a fine and stay out of trouble for the next 18 months. In explaining Hornsby's release, Judge Davis said that any money spent on a bondsman would be money that would not be available as restitution for the family. Addressing the judge, Detective Sandra Myers said this was a very emotional situation for the Slonina family because it was not a couple of incidences of charges to their daughter's credit card, but an ongoing occurrence. Myers said the bills had been going to the deceased girl's family for six months. Hornsby's attorney, Huntley Johnson, said Hornsby would likely spend a portion of the time with his mother in Jacksonville until his next court appearance. Florida football coach Urban Meyer was on a cross-country flight Friday afternoon and unavailable for comment.
I was just coming here to post this myself but see that Tailback beat me to it. Meyer has released a statement and it was very simple "He is not part of our program" If this is true, and I have no doubt but that it is, there is no room for Hornsby at Florida. The dead girl was a girlfriend of Joe Hayden who is also a Gator football player. Hornsby apparently took the card when he was helping Hayden clean out her apartment. If true then he could be facing jail time, and I for one won't be very sympathetic.
is this what Weis meant by bringing in "thugs and hoodlums"? He could win if he did it the florida way.
Excuse me AZ but this is just one guy and and obviously he has been kicked off the team. I think you are pretty misguided to call this the "Florida" way.
You will have to pardon me AirZona if I say two things. Number one if Weis said that he made a stupid remark. I doubt he really said that. Number two, if this is your style I feel sorry for you.

Obviously Weis is not referring to anyone in particular with his comment but AZ chooses to be more specific and point fingers....which is off-base. Since I don't know you too well AZ I'll give you the benefit of something purely misspoken rather than as an unacceptable personality issue.
Thanks for the link Arizona, here's what you said in your first post. Here's a quote from the last line of the link you posted I am not going to comment on what Weis said one way or the other, But as to what you said and the link you posted you are really making a credibility issue for yourself. Weis didn't say the Florida way, you added that yourself for whatever reason. You want to attack the Gators for whatever personal reason you might have that's your choice but this one was very flimsy, especially since the player was removed immediately from the program when this happened.
Weis said what he said and we all know what he meant. He did not mention any schools by name. I'll say out loud what we all know. There are some schools who will admit "student-athletes" and, I mean that in loosest of terms, who not only have dubious academic credentials but highly questionable social skills and/or a history of trouble. What they also have are incredible athletic skills that coaches covet. There are no illusions about the kid graduating one day or even attending class more than a bare minimum. If he can just stay out of serious trouble long enough to parlay his skills into a NC then we are A-OK. If you want to know who the major offenders are just look at the NCAA grad rates. With that said, Weis knew what he was getting into at ND and for him to make that statement is nothing more than an excuse on his part for his own lack of production. I would not want ND to lower their standards no matter what the consequences. As far as the other universities, it is what it is. If you don't have a problem with it, why should I?
That's fine George, but the description you gave doesn't describe Florida. Our entrance standards are well above NCAA minimums and Meyer has been emphasizing academics ever since he has been at Florida and as a result the football teams GPA and graduation rate has been improving steadily since Meyer arrived. The assumption that Arizona made was off the wall and incorrect.
"zona" you perhaps misspoke, that kid is a %hit, that being said my beloved "BUCKEYES" were in the recuiting hunt for him.As far as I know FLA. has been clean for awhile(Galen Hall) was he last ball-buster"as I recall and I think he is now at (sorry Tod) P.S.U. Thing is ya can't hang a program because of one or two kids and their screw-ups"
Weis was definitely not refering to Fla, everybody has there problem players. He's been going around to ND Alumni clubs since as the Head Coach he can't go to high schools like he has in the past, the new "Weis Rule" says he can't. So he's taking the time going around to alumni clubs, something a lot of coaches do, I know Steve Spurrier used to do it as well. Naturally in a relaxed environment of your fans and alumni some things are said that can be interpreted negatively by the fans of other schools. But Weis never named another school He said the following at a recent meeting with the Portland (Ore) ND club...substitute Thugs for players of high character. Personally I think he'd be wise to assume he was at a press conference as anything he says to anybody these days ends up on the internet very quickly. It's not just Weis and ND, it's all schools. I've seen posts on boards where a kid just got through talking to a player who he knows and runs immediately to his computer and posts some sort of summary of what the player said, like he's a more important person for posting it. Leads to a lot of gotcha stuff for the press. Terry

BTW I predict at least 25-30 or more players across the contury will be arrested for all sorts of things ranging from possession of weed or beer to stealing, robbery, assualt, or worse before training camp opens Aug. Terry
Another thing even though Weis says he tries to bring in players of high character, he's going to get some kids who once they are away from home do something bad and everybody including their family and friends will be shocked and dismayed by the conduct. All I have to do is look no further than Austin where Mack Brown has been harping on only bringing in kids of high character.....well the last 3 years have had a lot of those kids go bad. Including one idiot who was smart enough to graduate from HS early, be a 5* DE by both Rivals and Scout, sign with Texas, enroll early and before within 6 months be participating in a robbery with a previous high character kid who was kicked off the team because it turned out he wasn't a high character kid after all. The kid spent his first semester in jail. Sad.
Maybe AZ means the Florida International or Florida Atlantic way... http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=805049
Everybody knows that Florida is as dirty as they come. The only reason they didn't say anything about them during Spurrier years is because the media treated him like a little darling. I'm reminded of the K.O. return by (?) in the '96 Fiesta Bowl and the young man mimicked pulling a shotgun and blasting away...thugs are thugs and the entire state of Florida is loaded with them.
