    Can you give us the Cliff Notes version of what this is all about? How to select the teams, what's important in selecting, etc?

    The last time I played in a nascar league, it was extremely complicated and unless you guessed well in week one, you were behind the eight ball all season.

    This league is set up to be much easier for the novice. You select drivers in three different groups. You pick 2 drivers in group A, 4 drivers in group B, and 2 drivers in group C. That becomes your team.

    Each week, you activate drivers from each group. You activate 1 driver from the 2 in group A, 2 drivers from the 4 in group B, and 1 driver from the 2 in group C.

    Those 4 active drivers win points for you based upon their finish in the race that week.

    You are limited to how many times you can use a driver.... 9 I think. The season runs from now until Thanksgiving. There are all kinds of racing conditions and it takes a lot of homework if you're serious.

    Tom, it says you need to have the group number and password...not the group name.

    Sunday afternoon just after 2:30pm central is the deadline. So far, only Stu from here and Carl, a co-worker of mine are the only two takers.

    Not too hard to get at least a third place out of that line up. :wink:

    I'm in and have my lineup for week one.

    I may change before then though.

    I'm in (Sniper 1).

    For those of you who aren't familiar, it's easier than you think. Once you register, click on your name and at the top you'll see two little .pdf icons; one says "preview", and the other says, "race notes".

    The preview will give you the best driver choices for that week, with a detailed explanation of why they're the best choice for that particular race. In past seasons you had to have your drivers selected by Friday morning since qualifying is usually held on Friday afternoons. It'll probably be the same this season. If your driver wins the pole you get 10 extra points, five for second, three for third, and one for fourth. If any of your four drivers that you're locked into for the race (as Tom explained, although you choose two drivers from the "A" list, you must choose which one is your driver for that particular week) lead a lap you get ten extra points. If one of your drivers leads the most laps you get twenty.

    Don't be afraid to sign up. After a couple of weeks when you fully understand how to play it can be fun. I never gave a damn about NASCAR until I started doing this Yahoo league stuff back in 2002 or so. Now I'm watching all or part of every damn race to see where my drivers are.

    EDIT: VERY IMPORTANT, as someone has already said, you can only use a driver nine times during a season so don't think you can select Jeff Gordon once, and you're done for the year. I've seen a lot of people make that mistake. It also makes you think about whether you really want to use Robbie Gordon one particular week, or save him for the road courses, where he excels.

    If you have any questions please speak up, and thanks Tom for putting this together.

    Speaking of this stuff, Carson has been behind the wheel of a kart a grand total of 5 times now and it appears he is a sponsored racer as of today.</t>

    Getting a little more participation than I thought. Glad to have everyone in.

    Carts can be pretty dangerous and is extremely competitive and expensive. Most of today’s drivers in NASCAR got their start in go carts.

    true

    <t>all I know is that he really enjoys it.<br/>
    <br/>
    My thoughts on this.<br/>
    <br/>
    1. Its the only thing he's done that terrifies me. I can barely watch. If you saw me, you'd never know but my stomach is literally a ball of needles and my heart is going a thousand miles an hour. I am a notorious 'cool customer' type. The angst I feel watching him run it is almost unbearable.<br/>
    <br/>
    2. From coaching, and from the fantastic parenting lessons of my father, I know when to admit I don't know what the hell I am talking about and to trust those who do this for a living. This will have to be one of those times. I've always loved speed. I owned motorcycles and have done one stupid death defying thing after another...but I knew all about bikes and what my limits (as well as the bikes) were.<br/>
    <br/>
    3. Watching him run his cart, its like watching that kid playing sports who looks like a men compared to the other kids.. Not because of size, but just the way it all seems to come natural. In his first few laps, you could see he already figured out how to drift... he also naturally seems to read the angles of the turns and straightaway cutting perfect lines thru the apex of the turn.. I'd say most of the kids his age, and a little older, will run their carts at about 20 to 50% of the engine and carts capability. From the time he hopped in, its redlined full-blown 100%. He runs wide open all the time and is literally limited only by the chains, belts or engine...He is VERY good at this and it seems to be natural... and the day he gives it up, I will be happy.</t>

    Corey, the next step used to be USAC Sprint cars... dirt track racing. Now the kids can bypass that and go straight to USAC midget racing. Good luck!

    JIF,

    Tell Tony Stewart that it is foolishness. He'll ask you what you ever did that made you millions every year.

    I'll admit, the numbers are probably 1 out of every 1000 kids that get into carts will ever make it as far as NASCAR. However, the really talented kids can make it.

    cant see the thrill of cars running around an oval. Its similar to when there is a fire..crowds rush to the area hoping to see bodies pulled out. Car racing same mentality..people hoping to see a "crash".
