I missed that, I saw the post signing day statement that Mattison had been contacted by the Ravens and had turned down their initial offer and Meyer said they made another offer but never said he took it.
Sid......I think going to the Pro Bowl will bring in some northen-Miami Dade County residents and those in Broward and Palm Beach but certainly I am not making the trek from here in Coral Gables. Prices have also doubled 2008 Schedule not bad.....on Sept 6th I will go to Gainesville for the Canes/Gators game.....a sure win for UF since our talent just arrived at the freshman level and they got Superman at QB...it iwll still be fun anyway. ========================= Joco will most likely not return and he has good reasons
Terry, MCG answered you about Mattison and I'm sorry I didn't get back sooner. He's gone, we replaced him with Dan McCarney who was a DL coach at S. Florida and who was the head coach at Iowa State from many years. He seems like a good one.
Well as many as 6 Alabama signee's could be academic casualties. Here's Scout's ranking of those players Scout's ranking of these players: Jermaine Preyear - 3 star Alonzo Lawrence - 4 star Marcel Dareus - 4 star Kerry Murphy - 4 star Melvin Ray - 4 star Devonta Bolton - 4 star I would assume that losing that many 4 star players would impact their ranking and probably knock them out of #1. Not that it matters!
The obvious benefits of oversigning.....in the Big 10 and perhaps other conferences that place limits on oversigning they'd be hosed.
Terry, since some of these ranking use only the top 25 players I'm not sure just how much effect losing those players would have on their ranking. But I'm sure it will have some.
Bill that's true, but does that's a lot of 4* players to lose, in that 32 players do they have the 4* players to replace them in the #26 through #32 players that weren't included in the rankings. If they do then WOW, that's a deep class. As far as oversigning in general, in some ways it doesn't really matter if you sign players who don't qualify. It makes your recruiting look good but if they don't make it to the field then so what. Like a lot of people, I thought that a larger class would give you an advantage in the Signing Day rankings, but since they don't count anybody over 25 then the field is as level as it can be. Terry
Terry, I don't know if capping it at 25 is the way everyone does it or not. I think the article you posted with the formula is the one that capped it at 25. Also your point as to the rankings of the players who do not qualify compared to the ones who may replace them is a valid point. This just points out how different programs handle this situation. The Gators dropped two people, Sutton and Green, who were committed to us but didn't do their part in making sure their grades were in order. Both of them signed elsewhere, Sutton with S. Carolina and Green with Georgia Southern.
I don't think that is necessarily so. The count the top 25 players in the class. Now I can see how at some schools the lowest 7 or so will not "qualify" but in reality, not all of the top recruits should make it. So often when the players assemble in the fall, the "top" classes in Feb. have been decimated by non-qualifiers.
The oversignings are adjusted downward and don't count towards the rankings but that has nothing to do with what happens on the field. For certain those teams that have the benefit of oversigning are advantaged in terms of getting kids signed and on the field. Over the last 4 years I believe, SEC teams have on average signed 101 players while I believe the numbers for teams in the Big 10 is 85. I don't see how that can't possibly be an advantage....
recruiting <r>Hell, why stop at 32 or 33? why not 40 or 50. Just keep signing them. Sooner or later you find 25 who can meet some kind of academic standards. <br/> <br/> Come on......some of these kids can't even put a simple sentence together. There were a couple who committed at the U.S. Army All-star game that had trouble pronouncing the name of the school they were going to!! <br/> <br/> What the hey, they can play football right? <E></E></r>
