Stu, are you hearing that? If so I'm surprised, it seemed like he was the type of guy who'd have to have health issues to give up coaching, plus it's not like the expectations at Purdue are the same as they are at Ohio State. So it seems like he's been pretty steady and comfortable for Purdue.
That's strange IMO......looking for a successor without having had any conversation with the coach. It's as if the AD did not have the balls to approach the coach and discuss the matter. Very strange indeed.
yeah, I did hear that over the weekend...surprisingly little comment about it on the Purdue Sports List but most everybody, even those who have been wishing for a coaching change, agree that Joe has a right to be p*ssed and none seem really that excited about Chryst, though no real bad things said about him either. Morgan Burke has done a pretty good job with his coaching hires but I don't understand why all the drama. As far as the "comfortable for Purdue"...I think that even supporters of Joe Tiller (such as myself) are not content in the last 3 or 4 years...beating up on MAC teams and losing to B10 mid-to-upper tier teams...and losing most bowl games.
Certainly Wisconsin has played a much different style of football than Tiller has played, so I'm not sure if that says that the AD want's a different style of football or what. It seems odd that just as the Spread has gone from oddity to mainstream that Purdue would go to a grind'em out conservative power offense like Wisconsin. Terry
Interesting, I would think though that he would already have some idea about the potential of the program since he's recruited against them, played them and been in the same conference with them. I would think the things he would be interested in would be recruiting budget, facilities, assistants salaries, level of commitment to winning, ability to chose his own assistants (not be married to Joe's staff), etc. All that information comes from the AD.
Terry <t>He can see that with his own eyes, and get those numbers from the AD.. That's solid, those other things are more 'experience' things that can't be pitched in a weekend interview..<br/> <br/> If this is true, he's passed all that other stuff and he's considering the depth and context of a job... The stuff he's asking is probably the 'experience' of others with an internal working knowledge of Purdue that no longer work there.<br/> <br/> Lots of places look like one thing on the outside, but are nothing like that when you get there..</t>
Stu, would you agree with me that under Tiller Purdue never has had a strong rushing game, or put another way, a well-balanced offensive attack? I seem to equate PU's most successful seasons under Tiller with great passing (Brees, Orton) and solid defense.
Chryst is highly regarded but given how Tiller transformed Purdue from a B10 cellar dwellar to playing in the 2000 Rose Bowl and in playing in second tier bowls in almost every year he has been at Purdue, it is incredible that he did not appear to be consulted about this. An article in the Milwaukee paper ysterday suggested he was going to retire because of this but, based on the article Terry posted, it looks like things may have calmed down a bit.
Sid, the team was able to run the ball effectively during our best years...we had Montrell Lowe and some other pretty good backs. ..you can use the pass to set up the run, or you can use the run to set up the pass...but if you cannot run you are toast.
Now it's rumored to be Danny Hope of EKU... Chryst not going to Purdue Supposed to be a news conference Friday.
Interesting, FSU has preappointed Jumbo Fisher as their next coach, and now Purdue has annointed Hope as their next coach. Certainly makes a transition both from a recruiting standpoint and a staff standpoint much easier than some of the coach searches that we have witnessed in the last 4 or 5 years. I wonder if this trend will grow. I would think that either Galen Hall or Tom Bradley would be candidates to be named the coach in waiting for when JoePa retires. Of course they may retire before he does!!
Here is a more "inside" view of how Burke has handled the situation. I don't care for Kravitz because my elephant-never-forgets memory recalls his negative comments about ND following the 1993 season when he was a writer for the Rocky Mountain News. Nevertheless, he has earned a reputation in the Indy area as a writer who calls the shots as he sees them. http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080110/COLUMNISTS01/801100428/1070/SPORTS0602 Here is a brief passage that goes against the common perception of how Burke has handled the situation:
Thanks for posting that...I have always thought that Kravitz's stuff was worth reading. I think his credibility is pretty good (except, of course, when saying negative stuff about ND. )...he doesn't hesitate to criticize Purdue, IU, or anybody else.
