8) This is the first real bowl game of the post-season. Arizona State vs. Texas tonight at 5:00 PDT. Dennis Erickson vs. Mac Brown. Terry O'Keefe vs...uh...well, I actually don't know anybody who roots for ASU. They're kinda the red-headed step-child of the Pac10. I guess we'll just have to root against Texas anyway, just for drill. Arizona State may not be much of a university, but its a great place for a good time...
Mack has been tough on the team, gone back to training camp mentality. HIittin' and stuff. He's serious!
I just finished watching Vince Young take apart USC.... I wonder if he wore Tim Tebow p.j's to bed the night before!!
Somethings to watch for... Neither team has done well in previous Holiday Bowls, so something has to give... This game is in San Diego and BOTH teams recruit the San Diego area blue-chippers, so this game does have some importance for the schools involved... ASU always falls behind early, then comes back later. They are definitely a 2nd half team...
Texas Defense licking it's chops...ASU has given up 51 sacks this year...for a reference the woeful Irish OL gave up 58!!!
If Macks stepson doesn't commit the gaff of the year I think we could have run these guys out of the stadium in the first half. Although I have to say from what I saw he did not touch the ball.
wow <t>these officials are terrible. is this a combo Pac10/SEC crew or something? My god are they sh*tty.<br/> <br/> The kid didn't touch the ball, texas has gotten away with countless PIs, both teams holding, lots of hand games going on in the pile. Is this the WWE or the NCAA? <br/> <br/> Jeez these guys are bad.<br/> <br/> You guys look good Doc! You gotta watch out for Beer Bong Tech though. They aren't the best, but they are crafty.</t>
So this was the Pac10 Co-Champion? Might have finished ahead of Baylor in the B12 South :!: :!: 8) 8)
I just remembered that Erickson was the Miami coach when they beat Texas in the Cotton Bowl, commiting a NCAA record 11 personal foul penalities along the way. Man that felt good to put 52 pts up on him.
OT (Oh, Terry) - Didn't the Erickson-led Oregon State Beevurs stack up the personal fouls against Notre Dame in the Fiesta? Seems there were a lot of the old "Halo Rule" calls in that one. Congratulations on the win, Doc. It was a very satisfying game.
8) It was an entertaining game, which is about all I can hope for when I'm rooting against both teams. Some thoughts: - Arizona State's luck finally ran out. They played Cal and Oregon after both teams had been wiped out by injuries and they were blasted by USC. Tonight's game looked like the USC game, without USC's defense... - Is it just me or did Danny Sullivan look MUCH better than Rudy Carpenter for ASU? If Sullivan had started, this might have been a much different game. I thought that a lot of the hurries and sacks in the first half were Carpenter's fault... - How about that merciless camera crew and director who kept zooming in on Mac's stepson until they (Texas) stationed some folks to stand in between them and foil the shot? - I lost count of how many cheap shots the Devil players took, but they were doing those kind of things even on 3rd and 4th downs. With Erickson, this is only the beginning... - Brent the Cheerleader kept trying to promote that Texas running back (Charles?) as a 1st Round draft choice, but I just don't see it. He reminds me of Darius Walker. Guys like that don't get drafted. He'd better stay in school... - This was a young Lhorn team. They will get much better. That secondary still looks mighty green and they were saved all night by a good blitz and Carpenter's follies...
So George, you did know this was a Holiday Bowl thread didn't you??? Re: Erickson/OSU victory over ND....yeah the Beavers were pretty chippy in that one as well, but nothing like the Hurricanes in that early 90's Cotton Bowl. Both were blowout wins though for Erickson. With Bob Davie over on the ASU sideline and his son playing for Erickson I kept waiting for somebody to ask him about his game against Erickson Re: Jamall Charles, I would have to agree Jamall a lot like Darisu, he is of course a lot faster than Darius. But right now at this moment he's a very good college back but I can't see him as a star in the NFL or a 1st round back. He still needs to add some muscle another year would be very good for him. He certainly could develope into a good NFL back and I would take him for sure with a 3rd or 4th round choice. Re: Youth on the team. I hadn't really thought so much about us being young, but we aren't a Sr dominated team. We will lose some very good WR's and some good DL's. So we'll have a lot of starters back next year. Only problem is that many Texas fans put our 3 loss season squarely on the head of the Coaching staff and want the DCoord and the OCoord fired. After last nights game I don't think Mack will be firing Greg Davis and I wouldn't be surprised if Akina is back again. There will be lots of talent for them to coach as usual...can they do it.
I think JOCO <t>is spot on here..<br/> <br/> And no Terry, that isn't the Pac10 champ. USC nuked that team pretty bad earlier in the year. Your TB looked good though, how old is he? He was in the game late and I didn't get that. Dennis the Redeemer has some chippy teams and I thought it was a little careless by Brown to keep that kid in the game so late. Mind you, I'm not whining about RUTS, far from it. ASU is like USC. Most Pac10 guys wont give 2 sh*ts if you drop a house on them. Its just that, I'd fear for my starters safety and build depth.<br/> <br/> Texas' defensive design really hurts them. That scheme would get Texas KILLED in the Pac10. While you may look at the on field results and think I'm nuts, I can assure you its based in logic. Arizona State has a "Notre Dame-esque" offensive line when it comes to pass blocking. Truly one of the 3 or 4 worst offensive lines at pass blocking in the entire game. JOCO is right, Carpenter was pathetic as well and his backup looks better. Out in P10 portions of the country, that performance is worthy of having his man card pulled. In a league rich in tradition of great QBs calling their shots against big boys from eastern lands, and then delivering... Carpenter loaded his pull-ups with soft serve early and often....OK back to the scheme.. <br/> <br/> They are exposed, and many times unnecessarily in an attempt to create pressure. With all of those 5 star DL/DEs that Texas is lining up, they shouldn't need to send 7 so often to create pressure. If they face a QB who is fast enough to escape pressure, or has the balls to stand in there to deliver deep, they'd get slaughtered....I normally like Akina and I liked the things he's done in the past, but he's the weak link in that defense IMHO if this scheme continues.</t>
Texas defense was awfull down the stretch this year, and most Texas fans think Akina belongs back as a DB coach, that the Peter principle came into play when he moved up to DCoord. As far as Mack playing the starters late in the game, I think he was sending a message to the team, his team. Hey what'd ya think about those nifty feet of Colt McCoy. I'm thinking he watched some Vince Young Vids and listened to Rap instead of Christian Rock in the bowl workouts!!
A question: When ever they show Bob Davie's Son they say he is from Rialto California, which is not that far from Montclair, right? So do rich people live there?
