Well they couldn't run the version that Pat White runs, Mallet is as big as Vince Young but much slower with white boy moves. However the spread doesn't require a QB who is a superior runner like Pat White. Without much trouble he could run the Texas Tech version with their current QB's. I'm not sure but I think Mallet was a Spread QB in High School...ie operated out of the shotgun most of the time. It's a good hire for Michigan, he's a proven commodity in college and like Urban Meyer has earned his spurs in a lesser league and it's logical that he can move up and be as successfull. He has the personality and drive to take advantages of what UM has to offer with regards to recruiting. I did hear that when he met with his players they told him to get the f*ck out of the lockeroom and they didn't want him to coach them in the bowl game. Terry
Wow, Michigan hired two WV coaches this year. I like this hire a hellava lot. Rodriguez recruits the Midwest well and did a great job with WVA taking them two two BCS bowls. Had White not been hurt, WVA would have been playing Ohio State for the NC. I think the futue is going to be pretty bright for the Wolverines.
Great hire by Michigan...I liked this guy from the start. His offense could give Tressel some trouble..... 8)
Bobda, what's the talk about RR bringing the Spread Option to UM? Are you guys worried that Mallet will transfer? Is anybody worried that the traditonal UM pro style offense is going by the wayside? Terry
Right now, Terry, the only thing all Michigan fans agree on is that our present, alleged pro-style offense, as run by Debord, needs, along with Mike, to go bye bye. I like Mallet and recall that he seemed more effective running out of the shotgun than lining up under center. You could run some form of a spread with him. The buzz is that Pryor now has Michigan on his short list with RR's hiring, and that he is the second coming of Vince Young. Now while some PAC 10 fans thought that Young, at best, would be a third-string tight end in the Pac 10, Michigan fans hold Young in great esteem.
Pryor has been generally considered a Ohio State lock, getting him to Michigan is the first shot across the sweatervest.
looks like a good hire to me as well. We really were hoping that Lloyd would stick around a bit longer. I have also heard the rumors about Pryor, but that is a big maybe. Don
This could be a match made in football heaven. Rodriquez had a lot of ethical problems at West Virginia. Now he's landed at a school with the lowest academic standards for football players in the Big10... Can you say, "Pacman Jones?"
Nobody in scarlet and gray has ever considered Pryor a lock...indeed, the prevailing wisdom in Buckeye circles was that WVa always had the upper hand due to RR and the offense he runs....I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see him follow RR to Ann Arbor.
I can't speak for the Scarlet and Gray bunch but around the internet when people talk about where he was headed it was generally conceded that Ohio State was the destination. That's the scuttlebutt on both InsideTexas and IrishEyes. Recently I have heard thought that he had interest in both Oregon and WVA because of the style of their offenses. Who knows.
...at this point I'd say he is a Stripehead lock. If Coach T can bring him to Columbus, you'd have to say it would be Coach T's first win over RR in his new job! Re: Mallet and RR, No doubt a fine young man, but I don't think he is anywhere near mobil enough to be a material threat running RR's offense. I just can't see him staying up there....
Michigan coach <t>Well as far as I'm concerned, it's better that they have RR up there in than Les MIles. ND should be able to pull a lot more kids out of the traditional Mich recruiting areas who are more suited to the pro-style offense than the now "spread" offense that RR will employ at mich. <br/> <br/> I NEVER want to see anything close to a option type offense at ND again...so have at it Mich. ND will take all those pro-style QBs you can't use.</t>
Now I am going defend Michigan on this one.... There is a school down south in the Big Ten and one up north that I am certain don't come close in academic standards to UM. In fact...my guess is that UM is among the upper tier of Big Ten schools in this area.
Nuttin but the facts.... School up north....last School down south....3rd from last Michigan....3rd from top http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2007/10/ohio_state_football_buckeyes_n_2.html
You posted an article about graduation rates.....I don't believe that was the point in question. That's like responding to a weather inquiry about precipitation by giving the barometic pressure....facts no doubt, but "irrelevant" for certain.
MCG, Given your past experieces with Jo Co's debating techniques, do you really think there are any facts to support his claim?
