Tebow will be the favorite to be the 2nd guy to win it twice...Archie Griffin is the only guy to do it 2x. Matt Leinart had a shot but was upstaged by both Vince Young and Reggie Bush the next year. Jason White also had a shot but while he did have a good year, it wasn't good enough and he was upstaged by Adrian Peterson and Matt Leinart the next year. Both guys finished 3rd the 2nd time around. Both guys played for teams that went to the Nat'l Championship games the next year so the team success was there for both of them. Who will Tim Tebows competition come from next year???? Chase Daniel will be back as will Pat White and the Kansas QB, USC will have a new QB in Mark Sanchez who will have a tremendous supporting cast to help him in a run at it. The Georgia QB (Mark Stafford)will be a Jr and he has finished strong and the Dawgs should be a top 5 preseason team next year and he'll get consideration. If the Longhorns can resurge then Colt McCoy will be a candidate. In fact the B12 will have a lot of nationally prominant QB's, the kid from OU will be a factor and a dark horse might be Stephen McGee of A&M if Sherman can get the Ag's rolling from Day 1. Tebow the Favorite
It kills me to say it but Rudy Carpenter will be a strong candidate to win the heisman next year as much as i hate ASU but he will hopefully bring the heisman back to the Pac- 10 where it belongs: Palmer, Bush, Leinart. Since 2000 Pac-10=3, SEC= 2, Big 12= 2, Big 10=1.
Good god, no. Judy Crapenter winning the Heisman is the last thing I want to see. And unless Erickson shores up that O-Line next year there will be plenty more punchin' Judy by opposing team defenses.
re: Reggie Bush The best Heisman that USC could buy... re: Mark Sanchez He may not even be USC's starting QB next season. He went 2-1 as USC's starting QB this year, but next year Mitch Mustain will be able to play again. I believe that he started 8 games for Arkansas as a frosh, while Aaron Corp will be ready to go after red-shirting last year. Based on what I've seen, Sanchez will have a difficult time winning the job from either of them...
There's another kid from Florida, Percy Harvin. He's a wide receiver who is also our leading rusher. He was the first Gator in history to have 100 yards receiving and 100 yards rushing in a game earlier this season. He's a legit prospect and I would not be surprised to see Tebow pushing him.
It may come down to who is healthiest between Harvin and Tebow. I sure don't see Tebow's skills diminishing next year....it wasn't that he just got lucky in 2007. If anything he will be even better at the Qb position in '08 and his defense should be better and help him win more games.
What if his new TB, Emanuelle Moody, takes all those rushing TD's away from him? It will seem like he's not having as good a year.
That's an interesting point, Terry. He could be an even better QB than he was this year, but his rushing numbers and rushing TDs, the part of his game that clinched the Heisman, could be down. The Heisman is stats-driven. Whatever his stats, the kid is a leader, but in this era being a leader without gaudy stats won't win the Heisman. It certainly will be an interesting situation to watch, and I'm sure our Gator friends will keep us posted.
As for me, and I think most Gators, I believe and hope you are right about the running backs making more TD's next year and Tebow less. He had two injuries this year, the shoulder against Kentucky that affected him in the game against Georgia and probably Vandy. Then he broke his hand against FSU that is now in a cast, as you saw if you watched the Heisman. Tebow is a very good passer as you can see from his numbers this year. So less of the punishing running and matures a little as a passer he will still have a very good year if he doesn't get injured. You are right in that a reduction in his running numbers might keep him from winning the Heisman, but he's the kind of person that can handle that so either way he will be fine.
Winning games and championships is more important than Heismans for fans and Tebow alike. If Moody running effectively in the redzone will make that happen then we are all in favor. A good defense wouldn't hurt either. The thing is Moody would have to be pretty damned effective just to match what Tebow could do.
I agree with your statement MCG, but I think that the coaching staff may want to cut down on Tebow's carries for his health. He's already going to be a marked person next season, so cutting down on the tough carries in the red zone would probably be a good thing.
I wonder if Tebow would survive another year like '07. He got beat up pretty good this season, but next year he'll be toting the Heisman bullseye. You Florida guys better hope Meyer can better distribute the running load. Hits have a cumulative negative effect, and he ain't getting any younger! Oops... didn't see Bills comments before posting mine.
Have to post my congratulations here for Tim Tebow and you Gators fans, as y'all keep getting Heisman topics locked. Anyhow he is very deserving of the award and a great representative of college football. On topic; no doubt he will have the inside track next year...it will be his to lose and some folks will complain about that not being fair...but that's the way it is...and the way it was for Archie as well. Good luck to him and it will be interesting to watch.
