TOK, from an unbiased and largly uninterested observer, in fairness, his record at ND was far superior to his record at Wash.
Terry... <t>Art Briles is outstanding and what you will not read or hear is yes the money is a no-brainer from Baylor but he and Maggard the AD did not match. I know the particulars but will not comment. I hope he does well and he will improve Baylor on the offense alone once he gets some players in there but Baylor will always be a mutt for the OU, UT A&M etc not to mention who they play in the North division.</t>
Terry <t>I can see that. From 'our' point of view though. He took over a job that was being done 'ok' by a very average, if not bad, football coach in Bob Davie who never really seemed to 'get' the ND thing.

As a Buckeye of proud tradition, I am sure you can understand that.

So we hired Ty, and he showed us exactly what 'bad, lazy and not getting it' are all about.

While ND sucked this year, I have little doubt that what you saw this year would have taken place the last 3. Maybe not that bad...but at least 2 years barely above .500 and then the collapse we saw this year.. I feel that's a safe bet.</t>
So were the players, Terry. you could make the case that his performance at WA was on par with his performance at ND. In fact, should he be fired it would be more of an apples & apples affirmation of ND's action than anything different from ND. Having said that, I agree with Terry that the media will ignore it for obvious reasons. For the record, I supported TW longer than 90% of ND fans but reluctantly - for reasons I don't want to bore you with - concluded midway through his last season that he had to go. I still like and respect him, but I did not want him coaching my team.
Terry, I understand what you are saying, and you are right his record is worse. My point really is that he was not fired at ND because he was black, that is a canard that the black journalists across this country unfairly played against ND. It is why, I believe, that ND fans across the country are still angry over the treatment the Irish recieved and why when those same race baiting journalists went nuts over Charlies contract midseason 2005 old barely healed wounds were opened again. Unfortuneately Willingham failing at Washington is no real salve to the wound as there will be no retractions or admissions by those guys that maybe he isn't a good coach and the victim of discrimination after all.
I <t>just saw this on NDN. It sheds some light on the 'empty cupboard' theme many ND fans are talking about this year

STARTS BY TRUE FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORES BY YEAR:

2001...... 19

2002.......15

2003.......52

2004.......57

2005...... 31

2006...... 26

2007......101</t>
...fair enough. At the end of the day, you are ND and because you are ND you will always be the target of unfair shots from those jealous soles without the pedigree whose singular hope is that somehow, some way they can, in their own feeble minded way, reduce you to their level.....unfortunately it is the burden one bears with all great traditions such as yours......I would take it with a great amount of pride and take pity on the fools!
I think <r>that Ohio State fans, Michigan fans, Alabama fans etc.. teams with deep traditions and a long standing expectation of success would understand. Its not that we are better or anything like that...to each their own in that regard.

I guess it could be put this way for my Buckeye fans:

Imagine you fire Cooper, and hire Coach X. Coach X comes in and promptly:

-Stabs one of your legendary coaches in the back, a coach who brought him into the program btw, in a court of law.
-Whines constantly about the unrealistic expectations of the program and its fans.
-Whines even more about the academic rigors of the school.
-Produces very, very average on-field football results.
-Makes comments in public and private that your program should be more like one of those other programs out there... and speaks glowingly of all the great traditions of his former employer while whining or diminishing your own traditions.
-Complains constantly about the lack of NFL level talent in the program.
-In his final season, posts a 5-6 record with a team that included the following 20 future NFL players (Weaver, Campbell, Boiman, Harrison, Earl, Sapp, Irons, Black, Mahan, Vollers, Faine, Givens, Hunter, Owens, Lopienski, Holiday, Battle, Jones, Fisher, Grant)

And then replace him with a guy who does nothing, says the most brain numbing things and improves only his short game in his 3 years on campus. A guy so bad that you 'fondly' look back on the days when your team regularly took the field with 12 players after timeouts.

That's where we're at, and that's why we're so grumpy <E></E>

Meanwhile, the media constantly claims that we are somehow shorting these two jackasses!</r>
Willingham, not only went downhill fast on the field, he peaked with the game at FSU, but he also went downhill fast in recruiting. Also nobody wants to talk about the fact that he talked to Washington about the job he eventually took. But BuckeyeT has a good point, they did what they did because we are who we are...it attracts viewers. Terry
What we're waiting on? How about a former head coach that's in charge of finding the next head coach for Nebraska? A state he's from, a people he knows, and a working knowledge of CFB since 1962.
Gunner, Having been through this alot in the last few years, you'd better take a seat in the clubhouse, get you a tall gin and tonic and try not to throw your two-iron through the TV. In my experience it may get worse before it gets better.
Yeah....I'm still PO'd at Ty for that one. Made me look like a jackass for extolling the "toughness" of FSU at home. Then of course Ron Zook followed that up soon thereafter with a similar surprising win at Doak and half-ass U has become just that.
I don't know if I can believe some of the rumours. 1. Tommy Tubberville to Ark. 2. Nick Saban trying to get out of the Alabama job and go back to LSU. 3. Steve Spurrier also wants the LSU job.
Senior Chief, I know that. But the bright spot is, and I mean no Offense, Nebraska's version of Bear Bryant is still kickin'!
TOK <t>Tubbs has has a history in Arkansas, its possible.

He's an idiot if he does it, leave no doubt...

He's trying to get more money out of Auburn, he does this EVERY YEAR. I loathe Tubesteak and its so predictable that he's going to use a job opening to squeeze another contract extension down on the Plains..

No one was more pissed about A&M hiring Sherman and killing the rumor mill than Tubbs..

Auburn is a MUCH better job than Arkansas... Some jobs have more resources than others...Auburn has much more than Arkansas. Period.</t>
Terry, I have heard the same rumors about Tubbs, Saban and Spurrier. In fact some sources yesterday were saying the Tubbs to Arkansas was a done deal. There is no way I would think Saban comes back, and if Spurrier would end up in LSU there are some Gator fans who would be in complete state of shock.
The Butch Davis thing is pretty funny! He was also one of the rumored candidates at Florida when we got Urban, when a lot of Gators thought we were going to lose Meyer to Notre Dame Butch Davis's name came up.
And you know what? Great move to do this by Dr. Tom. It allows him to hit the recruiting trail to talk to present and future prospects, regardless if Callahan had already. NCAA rules stipulate that you're allowed one in home visit as a recruiting rep or the coach. After Osborne selects the new head coach, that guy (I'm convinced it's Gill) still is allowed to do his own visit. Double the impression on the kid. Just like the Guinness Beer ad says..."Brilliant!" This will go down as the Osborne Rule when it's looked at!
