Drum roll please... Jeff Tedford. A lot of rumors are still swirling, and there is a lot of disagreement amonst Aggies, but my guys say it's JT and that they have actually seen the contract that has initial approval from the Board of Regents. I think this will be a good hire for us. A guy that can actually develop an offense along with the money to spend on a real defensive coord should make for an interesting combo. I won't annoint him a savior just yet, but I'm looking forward to '08. Something I couldn't say halfway through '07!
Hey if true I think you are getting a good one. I think he may be ready to get away from that zoo in Berkly where the tree huggers are trying to stop building some sports facilities.
If Tedford comes to A&M, it will be a rebirth for Stephen McGee. He will no longer have to imitate a Navy or Air Force QB. Seriously I would look for a serious improvement in him.
8) I don't think that Tedford will do it. He's currently on a contract with a base salary of $1.5 million, with $300,00 in bonuses that expires in 2009. It also contains a clause paying him an additional baloon bonus of $2.5 million if he completes the contract, so he stands to get another $5.5 million by staying at Cal just two more years... Tedford is a West Coaster from Fresno State, with stints at Oregon and Cal. Does he even know where Texas is on a map? Now for the reasons why Tedford just might be willing to make a move: 1. Tedford said two years ago that he wouldn't move until his son graduated from high school. His son is a senior right now... 2. Texas A&M has already shown its willingness to blow huge sums of money on mediocraties like Franchione. They may be able to pay what he's actually worth on the open market, which is a lot... 3. The pain-in-the-arse Berkeley City Council, which is run by the students and professors at the 53,000 student school, is delaying and blocking all renovations, stadium improvements and facilities upgrades. They've made it illegal to cut down any trees or drive cars near the campus. Tedford has said that this is hurting his recruiting and he may have had all the Lefty, political correctness that he can stand... I'll be interested to see how this plays out. If Tedford, an ultimate Left Coaster, deserts Berkeley for greener pastures, it will send a huge message to the school that it must finally leave the 60's behind or face becoming a football doormat. Tedford is the most successful football coach at Cal in over 50 years...
I know Tedford is considered a great coach and he may, in fact, be a great coach but I wouldn't want him replacing Fulmer at Tennessee. I know they beat UT this year but I've never been all that impressed with Cal. They're soft on D and they never seem to live up to expectations. After climbing to number 2 this year, they have fallen flat on their faces. I think it would be a great idea for Tedford to get out of Cal while he still can. I'm just saying I wouldn't want him coaching my team.
Well according to the Houston Chronicle, the 3 top candidates for the A&M job are 1) Mike Sherman 2) Bob Davie 3) Chris Petersen of Boise State Tubberville never was considered.
Not .. <t>That the local writers have any credibility but I don't see Tedford at A&M either. Sherman does not excite me either.</t>
Now my guys are telling me Ted MAY have had a change of heart. It's possible he wants to stay on the west coast, and make a go out there. Would UCLA take a shot at him? I know for a FACT it is NOT Davie. Oh well... as long as it ain't Fran, I'm happy.
I know a lot of people (Aggies included) are questioning this hire, but I'm OK with it. Mike was VERY highly recommended by all the former players, and many coaches as well. Most Aggie concerns center on recruiting. A bunch of my "brothers" are convinced Sherman will be totally out of touch with today's kids. Doesn't seem to matter that he had no trouble connecting with them in his previous stops in College Station (was considered one of our top recruiters). Or that he can mention his Green Bay time if they have any NFL aspirations... It will be nice to come to spring practice, and the early games of next season with some curiosity, and excitement. No more "here comes the smoke draw" for me!!
Well I don't know why they think recruiting will be a problem. That is one thing that neither Weis or Callahan had a problem with comming from the NFL. Callahan had a #1 class and Weis has had 2 straight top 10 classes and is currently sitting at #1 in both Scout and Rivals. I think the problem is wheter or not an NFL coach can go from coaching where there is not a limitation on the practice time and where they are coaching men not high school kids. Weis has struggled with that aspect, it wasn't a big deal when he had Brady Quinn, Darius Walker, Jeff Samardzja and gang they were veterans. But this year the results on the field are worse than they should have been, and many think it's because he has not yet learned how to bring along HS kids. The other problem I see is that West Coast Offense seems to take forever to install in college. Willingham never did get it installed after 3 years. I don't know if that is a good college offense. I could be wrong though. I doubt you'd have liked yesterdays Texan game plan though!! Terry
Are you just getting up Zo? I mean you do know that Sherman has been announced? Just wanted to let you know so that you don't toss out that you hear Larry Coker is in the mix or something like that!
Terry, I'm not all that concerned. Mike spent quite a few years coaching at A&M so he already knows what it's like to work with college kids. His offensive lines were the best we've ever had. As a matter of fact he already stated he didn't know what "system" he would use because he wanted to see what the talent on hand would be suited to. www.Agtimes.com will get you to the free boards.
