Todays game was not as exciting as some of the past games, the rain was factor and both teams struggled to hold onto a slippery ball. Beanie Wells and a stellar defense proved to be the difference before a home Michigan crowd of nearly 112,000. I will give credit to both Chad Henne and Hart, both of whom played hurt and tried to get that one final win in the series. While I am not a great fan of Lloyd Carr, assuming he does retire from coaching, you cannot fault his winning percentage at Michigan in his 13 years. Looks like we are headed for the Rose Bowl and a likely match up with USC, just like the old days prior to the BCS bowls. We certainly fared much better this year than many of us anticipated, even with a soft schedule, prior to the conference games. Don
Congrats to you Buckeyes. The job that Tressel has done with your program is truly amazing, and when you think of the guys who left for the NFL after last year, to have another great season it just shows what a great coach he is. Future looks good as well as you guys are having a great year recruiting and just got the #1 overall player in the country in Tyrell Pryor the Vince Young clone.
Understatement of the year....at least in the top 5! Thank God I have Gameplan. Congrats on repeating as Big Ten Champs!
Congrats.. <t>To OSU. Think recruiting blue chip talent isn't huge? Wells the top HS back his senior year and Gholston was as good as it gets his senior year. Did they make a difference in the win over the ugly helments?<br/> <br/> OSU could be scarry good next year.</t>
Carr expected to announce retirement on Monday <r>So, who'll be tOUS's competition in the Big 10, in 2008??<br/> <br/> <U><s></s><B><s></s>Carr expected to announce retirement on Monday<e></e></B><e></e></U><br/> <br/> It appears that Michigan lost a little more than just the game against Ohio State.<br/> <br/> ESPN has learned that Michigan coach Lloyd Carr will hold a 10 a.m. press conference on Monday at which time he is expected to announce his retirement.<br/> <br/> Carr led many to believe he would retire after this season when he altered his contract last winter and made sure all of his assistants were given unprecedented, two-year deals in the spring. Speculation has run rampant about 62-year-old coach's future.<br/> <br/> "There will be a day to discuss that, and this isn't it," he said Saturday.<br/> <br/> With a 14-3 home loss Saturday, Carr became the first coach at Michigan (No. 21 BCS, No. 23 AP) to go 1-7 over a seven-year stretch against No. 7 Ohio State (11-1, 7-1 Big Ten).<br/> <br/> Cornerback Morgan Trent said Carr did not address his future before or after the game.<br/> <br/> "We'll just have to wait and see like everyone else," Trent said.<br/> <br/> <br/> Carr's Coaching Career<br/> A look at Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr's coaching resume:<br/> <br/> Years Position <br/> 1995-2007 Michigan head coach <br/> 1987-94 Michigan defensive coordinator* <br/> 1980-86 Michigan DB coach <br/> 1978-79 Illinois DB coach <br/> 1976-77 Eastern Michigan DB coach <br/> * -- Also served as assistant head coach from 1990-94. <br/> <br/> Signs have been pointing toward this being the 62-year-old's 13th and final year at the helm for Michigan (8-4, 6-2). Carr altered his contract last December, allowing him to easily make this his final season as coach and still collect deferred compensation. In March, his assistant coaches were given two-year deals to pay them through Feb. 28, 2009, even if they are not coaching at Michigan.<br/> <br/> Michigan opened the season ranked fifth in The Associated Press Top 25 but quickly fell out of the national championship discussion. Since becoming head coach in 1995, Carr is 121-40 and 81-23 in the Big Ten. He has won five Big Ten titles, one national title and led the Wolverines to a bowl game every season.<br/> <br/> Many others, however, have been talking about his possible successor for months, if not years.<br/> <br/> LSU coach Les Miles seems to be at the top of the list because he played for the late Bo Schembechler at Michigan. That is where Miles met his wife, and he was an assistant there under Schembechler.<br/> <br/> Even though Miles appears to be in a great situation leading the top-ranked Tigers in a talent-rich area of the country, the school seemed concerned enough about him bolting for Ann Arbor that it put a specific clause in his contract to make it an expensive move.<br/> <br/> In the "termination by coach" section of his deal, Michigan is the only other school mentioned. It states that Miles will not seek or accept employment as Michigan's coach. If Miles does leave LSU to coach the Wolverines, he must pay LSU $1.25 million.</r>
Any win over the Stripeheads is a great win.....especially one in the Big House for the conference championship. I'm quite proud of the effort the Buckeye kids and staff put forth under cold, wet and generally nasty conditions. Clearly the Buckeyes dominated the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball. It was very unfortunate that neither Henne nor Hart were even remotely close to healthy for this their last shot at their arch rival and I genuinely feel their deep disappointment at being physically unable to perform at anywhere near the high level they are both quite capable....those kids are warriors no question. Hart has been hampered by injuries it seems regularly for the last 2 years yet established the record as being the most productive back in M's storied history. I feel for the kid......a warrior - a vocal one for certain, but a warrior nonetheless. That said, Beanie Wells is not too shabby either..... ! Houston Larry, nobody wins consistently without talent.....the point many of us Buckeye fans make is that independent of how a class is rated by "insert name of recruiting guru here" it is more important what you do with them after you get them.....we've only had one recruiting class ranked in the top 10 in the last 5 years. One.....Krebs has pointed out in an earlier post that our recruiting efforts have been rated about evenly with ND's over the last 5 years and well below many, many others, yet our record over the last 5 years is pretty good. Gholston is a good example....he was only rated the 11 best DE in that class and only the 12th best prospect out of Mich that year....hell, M took 5 or 6 kids ranked more highly than Gholston. I don't know about those other 11 rated more highly than Gholston, but we think our kid is pretty good. TOK, I have not seen any confirmation about Pryor.....what is your source?
I thought I saw that Pryor had commited but I can't find it now. Looking at his list though I'd be shocked if he went anywhere but OSU. Florida - significant depth behind a great Soph QB already. Notre Dame - Dayne Crist already in the class no way he comes to ND Ohio State Penn State - I guess since he's a PA kid this is a possibilty Tennessee - Can't see it. Texas - I don't think we are even recruiting him actively anymore. West Virginia - what an upset that would be, it's a good offense for him but still it's WVA and he's the #1 recruit in the country....that's never happened and probably won't now.
Buckeye T, Whobe, Don et. al. An yet again for another damn year, congratulations. I cannot recall a game at home againt Ohio since the start of the Schembechler era where we were less competitive and so completely outplayed. The Bucks are an outstanding team and I truly hope things break right for you as this season ends so that you get a chance to play for the national championship. As for Michigan, it is time to find a coach able to build a team that is able to compete with the wizard from Youngstown. That is not going to be a easy task. I agree totally with Terry's observation that the most unappreciated aspect of Tressel is the ability of he and his coaching staff to find and develop talent. There is always great talent in Ohio but the Buckeye's either have the ability to: (a) turn high school talent judged by recruiting services to be 3 star talent into 5 star players; or (b) be able to tell when someonebody who evryone else thinks is a three star talent is really a 5 star guy. T showed a considerable amount of class after the game. His luadatory, post-game comments about Carr after the game contrasted sharply with Carr's petulant, childish, cursory post-game handshake. After losing 6 out of seven years to Tressel, he had the time to learn how to accept misfortune with a semblance of dignity
Bobda, you are too much....ever the gracious one. Actually, I'm sad to hear of Lloyds retirement....not in an evil sense, i.e his recent stuggles with the vested one, but in the sense of a passing of the torch so to speak.....as the years pass and we get further removed from Woody, Bo and their boys, I feel as if we lose something. A dignity, a sense of place, a set of solid core values and integrity, something....I can't put my finger on it, but I can feel it..... I hope Lloyd's retirement is everything he is seeking and I hope the chasm of a vacancy at one of the most storied of all college football programs creates havoc with the preparations of all whose teams are arbitrarily and temporarily ranked above us......
Thanks Bobda...gracious as always...it's a great rivalry and no doubt the ball will bounce back your way soon. If you want to talk about petulant you shoulda seen me after the Boilers lost to IU... My buddy Crazy John told me BEFORE THE GAME that a press conference was going to be held this week (he was told it was Tuesday)...and also he heard from a reliable source that a certain college coach's wife was in Ann Arbor last week...looking at houses. You know anything about that? :?:
According to a Michigan blogger, the Columbus Dispatch recently had an article indicating that in situations like this, the number 1 rumor is that a coaching candidate and/or spouse has been in the area looking at houses. Bobda's choices in order: Gary Barnett 8), Belotti, Grobe, Les Miles, Paul Johnson, Ferentz, Bielema...
