Most of Southern California is on fire. More than one million people have been evacuated and the fires range from north of Los Angeles to San Diego. The fires are being fed by Santa Ana winds of 60-90 mph and arsonists have been lighting the fires three at a time. I made it out to the desert to teach yesterday, passing scores of big rigs that had toppled over in the winds and smoke everywhere. I made it home several hours late when they opened Cajon Pass temporarily. I drove through fire on both sides of the freeway and all of the railroad tracks were on fire for miles at Lytle Creek. It looked like a war zone all the way home. Today I didn't get within 20 miles of the Pass. All the freeways were closed in Rancho Cucamonga near my home, so I have the day off. The freeways are closed, the trains have stopped and Ontario Airport is shut down. Everything has come to a halt... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,304276,00.html
Unbelievable! I saw the extent of it for the first time tonight on the early news. It's so hard to comprehend the massive destruction. According to the news, only 2 people have died so far, which in itself is hard to believe when you see the extent of the destruction.
Be safe my friend. Just remember the next time the Socals laugh at the midwesterners buried by snow in the winter, it beats being burned out of one's home.
Another arsonist was caught red-handed and shot (killed) near Cal State San Bernardino when he tried to escape by running over a policeman... I have tomorrow off. All schools in the desert have been closed, because of the smoke pouring off the mountains...
Hey Corey; just so you know Paul only had damage to his house but repairable... and Uncle Randy's house is still standing I heard they lost a few pets though. But the fires are still going up there... and he still cant go home. Paul said fighting this fire was the hardest thing he has had to do as a firefighter since he loves the mountain just like you guys do
Amazing how the fires effect sports fans here in Michigan. The Tiger's fireballing reliever Joel Zumaya underwent right shoulder surgery yesterday in San Diego. He'll miss about half of next season. He injured his shoulder moving his belongings fleeing from the wildfires.
