This is the worst Notre Dame team I've ever seen by a long shot and I can go back to 1964. This team is literally helpless. I was watching Pete Carroll throughout the game. He's animated and coaching full throttle from whistle to whistle. He's high fiving players, working the refs etc. Then I look at Weis. he stands stoically, hardly moving, staring intently at his laminated game plan like its a menu from a Chinese restaurant.
I think you mean 1963. I was there. Trust me, By the time the season ends, this team will not be as bad as that one........I hope.
I fear the University of Navy....seriously, I'm not joking. All of Nebraskas 30+ game winning streaks are gone, this could be the year the Navy streak goes. Corwin Brown has never coached against an offense like Navy. Terry
The Naval Academy played us tough when we were good. There is no reason to believe they won't eat our lunch this year.
Sid, Here are some stats from this season.... was the 1963 team this bad? USC 38-0 over Notre Dame, the largest margin of victory for USC over ND in the 79 game history. We were supposed to be fired up for this game. Green jerseys and all. 38-0 was our worst home loss since 1956 when we lost to Oklahoma 40-0 The last time we started 1-7 was 1960. 0-5 for the first time in school histiry Today was ND's 4th straight home loss, tying a school record. The offensive line has given up a school record 39 sacks already this year. We still have 4 games left. Notre Dame is 1-9 in our last 10 games. Read that again!! Our defense has given up over 30 points in 8 of the last 10 games In the last 10 games, we have been outscored 322-118. That is an average score of 32-12. Losing 38-0 to Michigan and USC in the same year.
The 1963 team was 2-8 and would have been 2-9 if the Iowa game had not been cancelled following President Kennedy's assassination. I know this team is bad.......one of the worst ever. I don't need your statistical analysis to assist me in recognizing that. There are 4 games left. If you don't mind, I'll wait until the season ends to see just how bad. I hope you and Terry make it that far. You two and all the others like you need to chill. This kind of stress is bad for your health.
a few thoughts <t>on 'rah rah' coaches:

I personally don't care for them. I didn't as a player and mocked them as a coach. If you want to cheer, pay for a ticket or put on a skirt.

Read the Trojan boards and listen closely. Pete has his strong suits, but like all people he has major weaknesses. One of which is his actual coaching ability in anything not related to defense. His teams are profanely talented, but look at who they've lost to since he started their run. This guy doesn't always have his team prepared.

on bad ND teams:

I obviously don't go back as far as many of my brothers here. However, I remember the bad teams of Faust, Davie and Willingham. With each of those 3 teams there was always something that we could hang our hat on and we'd all scream that we should be doing more, or using more, of that factor. Those were coaches that couldn't put kids in positions to win. I don't see that from this staff. We continue to put players in position to succeed and they just aren't doing it.

I do believe the defense is getting a raw deal. They are MUCH, MUCH better than the numbers indicate. Teams are rolling numbers on them because they are on the field all day long.

Clausen is clearly more talented than Sharpley. I hope once he is healthy he is back in the lineup. Contrary to many ramblings on NDN and our awful broadcast team, there were open WRs, he missed them....TERRIBLY. This was like watching Arnez Battle throw without the good feet. Sharpley has heart, and I love his desire to stick to it.. He's just not that good.

Speaking of that...

What is the deal with our FB Schwapp? He has been a shell of his former self since his knee injury. Time and time again, we are actually in a position for a successful blocking scheme.. the opponent is sending numbers.. there is 1 man who needs to be blocked and that man belongs to the FB.. he has ONE JOB...and he whiffs... time and time again.. Good lord, we have Armando Allen for that!! At least AA is a threat out of the backfield!! Terrible, just terrible.

our broadcasts:

I mention this during good times, and in bad. NBC's coverage of ND football is just awful. Non-ND fans make fun of it as being 'bush league' coverage and if you're an ND fan, you've long noted that the coverage is anything but ND friendly.

How about the sideline reporter getting on Clausen for not being as 'rah rah' on the sidelines this week as he has in every single moment since being replaced as the starter?!?!?!

If you want the real story, go check out the rather unhappy and unimpressed looking John David Booty watching Sanchez look every bit as good as him on the field.</t>
This... <t>Is the first time I can remember where I have little hope for the program. I'm embarrassed to say that but it is what it is. If you look at what was on that field yesterday and the way they play how do you "honestly" feel like we can dig out from this mess? Won't waste time going over positions as we all know the probelems.
Some of the effort in coverage yesterday was beyond belief. My guy Ambrose was torched all day as was Z. Would the ND scecondary coach tell me how you can line AW straight up with Fred Davis? My wife Linda might as well be out there. Z plays with little or no passion but who can blame him. At least those two cannot come back again. I know we have stud prospects on the way for the defense but LORD how long will that take to get where we stop anyone?
The offense IMO doesn't even warrant discussion considering hey can't get a first down.
Navy should worry us but Air Force will beat us for sure and does anyone really like the chances in Palo Alto?
I will still be in front of the set watching though just hoping a solution is found.</t>
In 1979 Florida was 0-10-1 and in the last game of the season gave a very good Florida State team all they could handle in a close loss. I remember watching that game on network TV and getting all jacked up only to be disappointed in the end. The good thing was I saw a glimmer of hope from watching that FSU game. The next season UF damned near beat out Ga and Herschel Walker for the SEC title in the "run Lindsay run" game. It's worth it to hope for better......hang in there guys.
Thanks, MCG. I appreciate your comments. It proves that one really bad season can be an aberration in the big picture and that it's possible to rebound from year to year. George's post about the '63 team and Corey's comments about Faust, Davie and TW got me thinking (dangerous). I can't speak for pre-1962 teams because I did not follow ND closely until I became a student. IMO what differentiates this team from the past bad teams is the fact that there were high expectations for those teams. There was not a shortage of depth or upperclassmen to make us worry about our chances. The '63 team was an anomoly in that they had fired Kuharich and appointed Hugh Devore interim head coach while they took their time searching for a head coach to take over following the '63 season. Nonetheless, we had high expectations because we had outstanding athletes. Recall that the very next season those same players under Ara came within one questionable holding call of an undefeated NC season. Unfortunately, poor Hugh Devore was overmatched as a head coach. It was similar with Faust, Davie and TW. Excellent athletes and visibly poor coaching. I'm not certain that poor head coaching is an issue like it was with the teams described above. Clearly we have a problem with our OL and special teams coaching. Perhaps we'll see some changes after the season ends. But this is the first year I can remember - Of course, my memory is not reliable - that the expectations were so emphatically low because of the glaring absence of experienced and highly competitive upperclassmen due to TW's recruiting failures. Unfortunately, several of the upperclassmen being counted on to lead the team have failed in their leadership and their play on the field, a fatal combination when considered in tandem with the overall lack of experience. For this reason I don't see the sky falling......yet. I'm keeping an open mind as we continue toward a merciful end to the season. I'm interested in what happens in two areas: 1) Does Charlie retain all the coaches or does he replace some? 2) Can we hold on to next year's committed recruits? I believe that the answers to those two questions will help determine where we are headed in the future.[/b]

thanks MCG <t>my thoughts are alot along the lines of Sid's.

i do think that our OL spacing is crap. whoever is responsible for that, needs to answer.. Be it Latina or Chuckles, someone needs to answer for the lack of fundamentals.</t>
Well Shockingly the Irish got a very big commitment, Mike Floyd a 5* WR from Minnesota verbaled to the Irish after the USC game. I really had given up on him, I figured with the season we were having and the season that Ohio State was having it would be a slam dunk for the Buckeyes. He will be a welcome addition to the offense next year. He's big and fast. Terry
Here's a site that does power ratings for college teams.http://www.jhowell.net/cf/cf2007.htm With 121 schools listed, what do you think the odds are that every team you've played to date have been in the top 38? The weakest team we've played is MSU who lost to no. 1 OSU by 7 on the road yesterday. This would have been a difficult season with an experienced team but paired with a young struggling one, it's impossible. I saw some improvement in the BC game. We still have a long, long way to go.
Terry... <t>Thanks to my fellow Houstonian for giving me some "good" news and if he sticks to the commit this is huge.
I had forgot about him as well. Now how do we get him the football?</t>
gipper the Navy game has never been more important. Corwin Brown has never prepped for their type of offense but he does have 2 weeks to do it. And Clausen should be healthy and I'll bet he starts. Maybe our OL can some how block the middies and we can get some offense going. In years past you might say that our team probably took a ho hum approach to the Navy game and they looked at it as the biggest game of the year after the Army game so they always come in jacked up. This year our guys better be as jacked up as the Navy, if so maybe we can run on them and the WR's can get more than 3 yds off the LOS.
