This is close to a topic Bill posted on LSU-KY but I thought it may be more broad in scope to consider the 2007 college football "game of the year" in hindsight after the games are actually played. So far I think the GOY is definitely the LSU-Ky game yesterday. What a battle it was for high stakes with the underdog winning out over #1. An immensely enjoyable game. Maybe some games to come can join this list. Any other nominees?
I'll say it's nice to have a crazy year like this to distract me from my own team's woes. (thankfully we will have a new direction soon!). I would put the Auburn/Florida game up there with L$U/UK, since it also came down to the last play. It's been a fun ride, and I hope it continues... 8)
Two candidates so far IMO for their nationwide impact in this order: -App. State over Michigan -Stanford over USC The deciding factor for me in each of the above games is the disparity between the teams prior to the opening kickoff. That level of disparity did not exist in LSU vs. KY. It's the 3 OT that makes the LSU-KY a big one but certainly not the "top" game on a national-impact basis. KY is a one-loss consensus good team and LSU was annointed #1 only halfway through a parity-filled season because they were the sole remaining undefeated team in the nation's consensus toughest conference. It's certainly a huge upset but nowhere near the proportion nationally of the two games above.
heck <t>we're only halfway thru amigo, im not even going to touch this. i'll save it for the off-season.</t>
Good nominees Sid. I would compare Stanford and Kentucky's football histories favorably except that Stanford has had more moments in the sun than Kentucky has. AppSt over Michigan certainly has to rank right up there for GOY.
From what I could see of it the Cal-Oregon game was a classic. Of course they're not SEC teams so it wasn't that special.
Gip, I heard the end of the Cal-Or State game on XM radio on the way back from South Bend. I wish I could reproduce the audio of the Cal play-by-play announcer as the QB ran with the ball and time ran out. It was at the same time funny and sad as he yelled in disbelief that Cal''s "magic season" had come to an end.
