I look for UGA Richt to put one on Fulmer. That means most likely UT will win. For the life of me I can't see how they will beat UGA. Keep in mind I couldn't see how SC could beat UGA. I still haven't figured that one out? Anyway, Richt seems to have Fulmers number. We'll know Saturday.
It's pretty simple to me Tailback, it's called the SEC. We love beating each other when we are the underdog.
Fulmer's feelin' the warmth creep into his Lazy Boy recliner. Beat UGA or the BTUs turn up a bit. The Spurrier rumors are reving up but I don't believe it. Look for some new faces on defense. Not exactly the best time to move people but the defense couldn't be much worse. But at times, in spurts, they look great. Who knows??? The team with the ball last wins! Better have the ball last Fulmer! I am in Richmond Virginia and will be all week. I will get to see the game at home though. I am due back in Austin at 11 a.m. on Saturday. If American Airlines doesn't screw it up, I'll be at the house about an hour before game time.
:?: OK you Southerners, clue me in. Is this a "rivalry" game; a "hatred" game; or just an old-fashioned "I don't like yo face" game? Remember, all I know about the SEC is from you guys. ..........JO'Co
JO'Co, when the SEC switched to two divisions and a playoff Tennessee, Florida and Georgia found themselves in the same division. Since that time one of the three have won the East every year. I don't know about the Tennessee and Georgia fans but I always consider my main competition a rival.
I'd put this <t>in the 'I dont like your face' game.<br/> <br/> Tennessee' rivals are Alabama and Florida now with the new divisions. The Georgia game means a lot, but there's not a lot of love there. I think rivals have a certain amount of respect for each other.<br/> <br/> I don't see that here.. That's just this guy's opinion though. I'd ask TB and Tom/Cindy/Aquila for a more experienced and qualified answer.</t>
For me, it is plain rivalry... nothing more... nothing less. I can't speak for any other Tennessee fans, or any Georgia fans. From junior high until I was about 30 years old, you could call it a hatred game. Alabama fell into that description as well. Adding years to your time here on Earth tends to curb that hatred. You begin to learn that sports are mere entertainment. Don't get me wrong. I still love Tennessee Football as much or more than I did back then. I just can't place the importance on sports that would generate a hatred for anything... Except for... Nah, anything. 8)
Tom, Seriously, I agree with the mellowing with age thing. When I was younger, I hated Auburn because in Alabama if you loved Alabama you had to hate Auburn. That feeling has subsided into irritation. Now Auburn just bugs the !@$% out of me. Oh yeah and I hate Florida because everyone hates Florida.
I don't hate UT, I just don't have any respect for their coach. The reason I don't like their coach has nothing to do with the ass kickings he use to put on UGA. That was UGA's fault. They weren't coached to be tough and UT was. The reason I most dislike Fulmer is because of his poor sportmanship afte UGA turned the corner and started putting a few whippings on him. Although Tom will disagree, Fulmer is a terrible loser. He's not the type that will UGA any credit after a win, It's always a sort of back handed compliment. Anbyway I believe that's how most UGA fans feel about UT. I believe UGA fans dislike UT, Auburn and Florida about the same. Maybe Florida most of all? After all the UT beatings it's become I just don't like yo face kind of game. Fulmer is hated almost as bad as Spurrier. I dislike him worse.
I remember the comment you fumed over the most: Tennessee coach Fulmer is being interviewed going in to half time. He makes the statement: You went totally ape over that comment saying: Your hatred of the man made you believe the literal translation. All he meant was that our defense was giving up too many big plays... not that he was "giving" you anything. I thought the situation comical at the time and I still do.
It goes way beyond that Tom. The comments by him during a few of his Coach's shows is what I'm most referring to. That's been years back and I can't exactly remember his comments to post them. Good try though. Anyway, JO'Co asked to be clued in to how fans of both sides felt about this rivalry. I just stated what I've read and believe to be true about how UGA fans feel. It's no big deal. Just sayin'. If UGA wins, I will try to point out another example of what I think will be a back handed compliment from Fulmer.
You know, if you guys in the South would at least consider Florida to be part of the South, you might not hate them so much.
I don't the reason I  hate Florida (you would have to ask MCG why we hate them), I just know that EVERYONE hates Florida. MCG told me so.
I'm really not sure why but I really hate Georgia. I don't necessarily think of them as being a great rival comparable to Florida and Alabama but they're just sort of like a pesky team with what is often perceived as being rude fans that can rise up and beat the snot out of you. As far as rivals of Tennessee go, IMO Alabama is a chief rival because of a long history and the back and forth long streaks of winning and losing on both sides. Florida, of course, is a very hated rival because of the fierce games in the 1990s and the one-sidedness of this matchup in the Fulmer era. In the mid to late 90s this was the game that decided the SEC period. Of course, you had sometimes were UF won and UT was able to sneak in the backdoor but this was the premier matchup in the SEC and one of the top matchups in the nation. Georgia, on the other hand, is one of those neighboring state matchups but the game historically hasn't had as much significance as the Alabama game and in the late 90s Georgia was virtually an afterthought in the SEC picture. More recently though, Georgia, of course, has been a real force but I just don't think the fire exists in the UT-UGa rivalry as exists in the other two. Coinciding with Geogia's emegence has been Tennessee's decline and, because of that, this game hasn't meant as much in the most recent history either. I may be far off base here but that's just my take.
AQUILA, What you described between UT and UGA is similar to what I have tried to convey (unsuccessfully, I'm sorry to say) to MCG. For Alabama, of course Auburn is our blood rival, but Tennessee and LSU are a close 2nd. UF was in the other division since the SEC divided, which was nearly coincidental with Florida's rise in stature (AS). Alabama does have a long history with UGA but that has never developed to the level of Tennessee or LSU. 8)
One of the ways, I think, to determine how big a rivalry a game is, is to see if it has a well-known nickname. Look at Bama---"Iron Bowl" and "Third Saturday in October..." Although I agree that LSU is a big rivalry, I would think that Auburn and Tenn are the 2 biggest. How about the "Egg Bowl" and the "Worlds Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party?" Those are 2 big rivalries. Outside of the SEC, you have some of the classics like the "The Game" "The Big Game" "Little Brown Jug" "Paul Bunyan's Axe" etc...Exceptions? Maybe--correct me if I'm wrong, (I haven't had any coffee today, so I may be) but I don't remember a nickname for ND-USC, Ohio St-Mich, or Oklahoma-Nebraska... Roll Tide!
