Absolutely TOK.....I'll never forget that image for as long as I live. Read his book as a youngster wherein he talked at length about the importance of being disciplined about only hitting good pitches.....made me a pretty decent hitter back in the day, but didn't help me learn how to hit a breaking ball or to make the play in the hole.

Anyway, if I'm not mistaken , that's for sure Teddy Ballgames "Hitting Zone" or "Happy Zone", I forget exactly what he called it.....

 

I don't think anybody will figure it out. It's a Ted Williams device, that's the strike zone and the numbers on the ball represent what Ted thought he would hit if every pitch were thrown in that area. He tried to never swing at the white balls unless he had 2 strikes on him.

Teddy ballgame didn't just accidentally become a great hitter, it was a science to him.

I recall seeing that diagram in a SI article on Williams many yrs. ago. Of course the mystery is, just how does a hitter know where the pitch will end up when it's halfway to the plate? Therein lies the skill of the great hitter.

I always thought he was a great, great player.....that is until Jiffy taught me otherwise! :wink:
