Members, Last year, there were several times that we over taxed Scott’s free time in getting the contest up in a timely fashion. None of the moderators have the time it takes to run a contest of this sort as well. With this in mind, we suggest that the contest be moved to Yahoo this year. We are opening this topic for discussion on the pro’s and con’s of the Yahoo contest vs. the normal Skybox contest. All discussion is appreciated.
I was in the InsideTexas Yahoo contest last year and I was personally impressed with how it worked. You could even set it to email you reminders that you needed to make your picks. You can't see everybody elses picks until after the picks are closed, then you can see everybody in the contest in a sort of spreadsheet like view. Also you can pick on just point spreads and/or on what is called confidence points. Confidence Points are used to give a different weight to each game in a given week. You'll assign a point value (from 1 to 15 if there are 15 games, 1 to 14 if there are 14 games, etc.) to each game based on how strongly you feel about the accuracy of your selection. If your selection is correct, you'll receive points equal to the confidence-point value you associated with that game.
My office has had a yahoo group for the last two years. The main advantage I see is the zero setup time. All of us have lives outside of Skybox and work. Practically none of us have the time to commit to setting up the contest weekly like Scott has been doing. We can set up automatic deletion of lowest week score so that missing one week does not drop anyone out of contention. The games picked are all games involving top 25 teams. There could be up to 25 games each week. The only “con” I see is that it is not on our site. It requires that we save a favorite for the Yahoo login page and remember a password. Other thoughts???
We meant to make this an announcement that would stay at the top. Oops... didn't happen. If it drops too far, we will bump it back up.
Probably a good idea guys. I was about to mention it to the mods, but you beat me to it! My work sched is about to get very ugly (just worked Sat and Sun!) with no relief in sight. I'm going to have to fight tooth and nail to use some of my season tickets. Kesley was working to automate something, but I don't know if he's had time to get much done. I hate to say it, but at this point it's probably Yahoo or nothing if no one else wants to take a turn in the barrel...
I think it's a good idea. Scott and Kes have done a great job for us, but they are young, hardworking guys who need to make a living. I'm sure we all know what it's like to be in the same situation. I'm familiar with Yahoo through fantasy baseball and NFL football. I'm in favor of the move. It's worked great for us before to go outside (NCAAs). I say let's do it.
Young?? Who's young? I've been hanging around with you geezers for so long you've pushed me into my 40's!! I never saw it coming... I was just a peach-fuzz faced kid when I wandered into Prodigy, and you guys AGED me!!
It is looking like we are leaning toward Yahoo. If we go to Yahoo, we need to decide on the format. An announcement will be coming out in a few minutes to discuss the format.
We have put up an announcement with a poll for choosing between Point Spread and Confidence Points. If any other options are to be discussed, another announcement will be posted.
Yer dern tootin well have our own group! It will be password protected so that we are the only ones that can register.
Take it to Yahoo. Posting in these forums is supposed to be fun. If the contest setup is becoming a chore for one of our members, then let's just do it different way. ...........JO'Co
Please take notice of the announcement at the top of the page. Reply to it to get your password by Skybox Private Mail so you can sign up for this year's football contest.
