What a sad story. I've always wondered why those guys don't wear helmets when they are coaching 3rd base and 1st base. They make ballplayers wear them on the basepaths. He was married and his wife was pregnant.

as one who has been drilled

<t>by line drives, i've often wondered the same thing.. but like all things baseball, its tradition. you just don't do it. i wouldn't be against that change that. i've managed to keep from getting hit in the head, but i've been drilled in the back on a few hit and runs where my attention could not be at home plate. it doesn't feel good.<br/>

this is just a terrible tragedy</t>

This is really sad. I've watched this game for over 50 years and I've never seen or heard of this happening.

Yes, very sad. Very tragic. I read in the Indy Star this morning that he once played for the Indianapolis Indians.

Geez this is terrible, but its a fluke. The last player to refuse to wear a helmet was Willie Mays who retired in 1973. I agree with Willie. Players shouldn't have to wear helmets or anything else. Here's the only death in MLB history...

When it rains it pours. What a terrible tragedy.....again. Only 12 years old. The article is in today's South Bend Tribune.

That's a terrible tragedy for 2 young girls, of course the girl who died, but also the girl who threw the ball. I imagine, even though she was just doing a drill, will feel a lot of unwarranted guilt over this tragedy.
