Brady Quinn of the Cleveland Browns....now all he has to do is actually play QB in the NFL at an All-Star level and somebody will care. I love Brady, but this is a little over the top, and just fodder for his opponents. Somewhere Sonny Jurgeson, Bobby Layne, Joe Namath, and few other of the old QB's are laughing and asking for another drink!!
None of those QBS, as great as they were, had to deal with the caliber of athlete that we have today. There are lot of pro QBs who are in very questionable shape. I spent a weekend around Chad Pennington on the trip to Cleveland last year and, believe me, this guy you would never guess as a pro QB by appearance. He is injured all the time and has a very weak arm. But he compensates with a tremendous analytical mind. So we know Quinn is in shape, he is smart, he is playing in familiar territory and he is used to the big spotlight. I think he'll do fine.
Terry, I think that's a pretty good article about a guy who has confidence he will make it in the pros. I don't see any negatives for Quinn in that article.
I've never been convinced that QBs have to be in good shape, or even any shape to be effective, because of this guy... Billy Kilmer was one of the greatest all-around athletes ever to come out of this area. He was a high school All-American in football, baseball and basketball in Azusa, then he was the all-everything QB at Citrus JC, before becoming an All-American at UCLA. He finished 5th in the Heisman voting his senior year, not that he really was a senior or attended classes. His pro career was, shall we say, "checkered?" As the top draft choice of the 49ers, he got drunk and drove his car into the San Francisco Bay and broke his leg. He was the starting QB at several NFL teams, with his glory days coming at Washington under George Allen. He refused to run, except to the bar and believed that beer made him play better...
Are we supposed to believe that these pro scouts know anything about who will make it and who won't. I've got 2 names that say it all, Tom Brady and Ryan Leaf.
Brady may get a shot too soon...nobody's jumping up and down over the job Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson did Sat. night. The ONE good thing that seems to have happened is that the Brown's revamped offensive line seemed a lot better...geez, wouldn't it be nice not to ruin another potentially solid quarterback's career before it even gets off the ground? Quarterback Derby Week 2
At the end of the article it mentions Ken Dorsey as his mentor. I guess this means that Dorsey is not playing and is spending time with the Browns working with BQ?
That has to be a good thing for BQ. Needless to say, there are many, many new followers of the Browns in terms of watching BQ's progress.
Personally, I am going to withhold my enthusiasm until I see how well we protect him. I like BQ just fine, but I remember too many Browns QB's getting killed by no line...
Browns Suck! But I'm thinking more of the old Browns, where the Oilers had to bring a hammer and nails to be able to hang up their clothes in the Cleveland visitors lockeroom. The Browns were hard on the old Oilers.
I've actually met Bruce at a BBQ and he commented 'nice hat' to my ND chapeau. He's still in great physical shape, very nice and large family as well. I sort of lost my Browns hate when they became the Ravens.
