The Anteaters are wearing their giant-killing underoos this year! They come back on ASU's closer to tie the game in the 8th, and put them away in extra innings.

I wonder if they have anything left in the tank for Oregon St???

Impressive..

<t>To say the least the way those guys hang in games. Just as unimpressive was the pitiful second base ump in this game that couldn't get a call correct if his life depended on it. Even the announcers were amazed at those two missed calls.<br/>

Well I have to admit I sort of like ASU baseball since former Fighting Irish Coach Pat Murphy, who essentially revived the ND program, is the ASU coach. Murph did a great job at ND, with little money and support.

I will admit to a little schadenfreude over ASSU's ignominious exit from the CWS. Normally I'll root for a conference team, but the Sun Gerbils fans were talking as though the games were mere formalities leading up to their coronation. The only way I could possibly shed a tear over their defeat would be to pluck a nose hair.

I like Murphy, and I appreciate that under him the ASU program did a fine job of developing Dustin Pedroia, now starting at second base for the Old Towne Team. If you go to the ASU baseball board on Scout, though, you'll see a lot of fans unhappy with him. You'll also see that the Vols appear to be interested in him.

The University of Tennessee is expected to announce Todd Raleigh as its new head baseball coach Thursday morning at an 11 o'clock press conference, multiple sources have told the News Sentinel.
Raleigh will replace Rod Delmonico, who was fired last month after 18 seasons at Tennessee.

Raleigh, a Vermont native, has spent the last eight seasons at Western Carolina and taken the Catamounts to the NCAA tournament twice, in 2003 and 2007.

Additionally the News Sentinel has confirmed that Tony Delmonico will transfer to Florida State.

Tony Delmonico was an All-SEC tournament selection this season as a sophomore. The infielder led the Vols in runs, home runs, RBI and walks in 2007.

Yikes this is a disturbing story about one of Oregon States best players. I can tell you for sure that he would not be playing for Notre Dame if he pulled this stunt. Of course most ND fans remember the thug composition of the OSU football team that beat them in the Fiesta Bowl 2000.

OMAHA, Neb. O ne year ago, Margie Yasuda was cheering and waving signs for ESPN cameras as Oregon State made its heart-stopping run through the College World Series. Her son, outfielder Mike Lissman, was helping the Beavers to their first baseball national championship.

Today, as Oregon State begins its bid to repeat as champion, Yasuda is on probation in Ontario, Ore., having served 17 days in jail. She is prohibited from leaving the state.

Lissman also is on probation, albeit a lenient version that allowed him to travel to the Series.

Mother and son changed their lives forever with overlapping crimes. But one question hangs in the air: Why is Lissman, who pleaded guilty less than a month ago to stealing $8,000 from an elderly relative, carrying his team-leading .323 average to the plate as though nothing happened? Why didn't Oregon State punish him?

The saga began when Yasuda pleaded guilty April 10 to felony theft for stealing more than $30,000 from an uncle's bank account. In addition to being ordered to pay restitution, Yasuda was sentenced to 24 months of supervised probation and ordered not to have contact with her son.

The uncle had given Yasuda power of attorney over his finances in August because he wanted to make sure, as he entered the hospital for a medical procedure, that his bills would be paid.

When he learned that more than $36,000 had been withdrawn from his account, the uncle -- Lissman's great uncle -- ended the power-of-attorney agreement. Police concluded that checks written in the victim's name were forged. That was where Lissman came in.

Someone in Corvallis -- police assert it was Lissman -- used the victim's account to make purchases at places ranging from fast food joints to the OSU Bookstore to a smoke shop called Bad Habits. Someone also wrote three checks, totaling $2,900, to "Michael Lissman" and forged the victim's signature, according to a police report. The victim told police he "did not give permission to Mr. Lissman to access his account."

On May 21, after a four-loss streak that left Oregon State fighting for its playoff life, Lissman pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree theft, which is a misdemeanor. Lissman told the court that his great uncle, who is 85, gave him checks and a credit card. Lissman also said, "I should not have taken them."

A judge sentenced the 22-year-old senior to 18 months of probation -- six months more than the prosecutor recommended. The judge also ordered Lissman to complete 400 hours of community service, pay his great uncle $7,992 in restitution and write a letter of apology to him to be published in the Argus Observer of Ontario. The apology has yet to arrive, the newspaper's editor said.

As you might recall from the spike of legal issues involving Oregon State football players a few years ago, the OSU athletic department has a system of punishments for athletes who run afoul of the law. Theft isn't included in the policy, but when it was released, Oregon State athletic director Bob De Carolis said the effort to keep athletes in line was sweeping: "I think the message should be, 'Do the right thing.' "

Mike Lissman did not. Daniel Norris, Malheur County district attorney, said he was poised to charge Lissman with felony theft. The only reason he didn't, Norris said, was that the victim didn't want to pin a felony on his great-nephew.

On Thursday, Oregon State coach Pat Casey declined to comment on the issue. De Carolis, reached Friday, said that when Lissman was charged, Casey suggested suspending him. But De Carolis advised Casey to wait for more information. The information they got downplayed the charges against Lissman, De Carolis said.

Neither Casey nor De Carolis heard what came out in Lissman's plea hearing: how close he was to being charged with a felony, the overwhelming evidence that he forged checks, Lissman's admission that what he did was wrong. De Carolis said the athletic department's usual line of communication, involving state police and department support staff, broke down. They didn't know.

"If he had that information, he probably would have carried through with some kind of suspension," De Carolis said of Casey. "But that's kind of water over the dam. Because usually you try to do (suspensions) at the time."

As a result of athletic officials' ignorance, the Beavers appear as though they don't care what Lissman did. Here is their best hitter, who stood guilty in court just before his team won two games to barely qualify for the NCAA playoffs, swinging away at the College World Series.

Turns out it wasn't favoritism that saved Lissman from punishment. It was incompetence.
