From CFN: http://cfn.scout.com/2/646775.html "Enjoy the ride now, Florida. Meyer will soon be handed the keys to a bank vault by some NFL team looking for an instant infusion of magic, and unlike other college coaches who made the jump, Meyer appears to be a good pro fit. But for the time being, Florida is back to the heyday of the 1990s, when Steve Spurrier’s crew was the SEC’s top dog. To the fear of the rest of the league, the Gators appear to be on the verge of being even better." ....me like.....
While of course anything is possible if the money is right, for some reason I just don't see Meyer as longing to prove himself in the NFL.
Meyer's offense appears to be on the verge of working very well in the SEC but in the NFL I just don't think so. Hopefully he has found the job of his life and will never leave. I know Foley now has more cash to throw his way if necessary...especially if he hires Grant from VCU at less than half of what he was going to give Donovan.
Most coaches are not truly married to one style of offense. The offense that Coach Royal won the Nat'l Championship with in 1963 was vastly different from the offense he won the Nat'l Championships in 1969 and 1970. Bear Bryant the same. Barry Switzer won college NC's with the wishbone and then won a Super Bowl with the Cowboys. Mack Browns offense with Ricky Williams, Major Applewhite and Chris Simms was a far cry from his offense with Vince Young. I'm sure there are lots more examples.
At his press conference when Meyer was named the Head Coach of the Gators he clearly said he was a college coach and wasn't interested in the pros. He said he loved the college atmosphere. Since we've lost two great coaches to the pros I'll always be leary, but at this point I believe him.
"Since we've lost two great coaches to the pros I'll always be leary, but at this point I believe him." Coincidence? Or part of a larger issue in Gainesville. I think it's just timing and success and the fact that Donovan and Spurrier have been two guys at the top of their college game looking for a different challenge if not huge bucks. Now...if Saban for instance had a great run at Bama no way he would opt again for the pros I don't think. Can't really say that for Steve though if he had what he thought might be a great situation with a great Qb become available. With Meyer I feel he is there to stay for at least a 10 year run but look at Billy D....he did 11 years and then the "right" job came along. Say in 10 years the Jags offered Meyer the moon and he already had won another NC at UF and 2 or 3 more SEC titles. He could go then but not before I don't think.
I don't know anymore. Meyer is pretty young and like you said another NC and maybe the loss of a big senior class....who knows. I wonder if we will ever see anyone stay anywhere for 20 years again.
Mack Brown is entering his 10th season at Texas, I wouldn't be shocked to see Mack go to 15-20 years at Texas.
MCG, I don't think there is any issue in Gainesville, I believe we have been fortunate to have good coaches and many times good coaches move on to the pros. I am still optimistic that Meyer will remain at Florida for a long time and not go to the pros. But I think when you have a good coach that lasts ten or more years you can consider yourself lucky. Miami has recovered from losing a football coach several times and that's what I think the Gators will do in this basketball situation.
I had a roomate once that stayed at Purdue as an undergrad for nearly 10 years, but that's a different story.
