If, as projected, at least one, perhaps two, Canes get drafted into the first round of the NFL on Saturday it would be nothing less than expanding on the stranglehold Miami football players have as first round picks. This would be the 13th straight year of a Cane being selected as first rounders. Of course, the old record also belongs to Miami, and the one before that and before that too. Miami has the highest number of active players in the NFL and the highest number of game-breaking stars as well. Just witness the amazing Devin Hester for Chicago and the incredible Reggie Wayne for Super Champ Indianapolis scoring back-to-back. By the way, perhaps NO GATORS will be selected in the first round...hmmmm
8) JOCOMEISTER....I see HuskerObject and TexasTim a/k/a Double T are still in the throes of denials from past plunderings in the hands of the Canes. There is an eerie and pervasive silence on campus and elswhere about this upcoming Cane team.....it all revolves around whether a QB will emerge. The D will be top ten but the O is a mystery. As always, talent abounds three-deep....except for QB.....so I dunno either whats gonna happen. Our schedule is tougher at the middle and the end.....and thats good because it may allow one of our QBs to grow in confidence thru the first few games.
"By the way, perhaps NO GATORS will be selected in the first round" http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/6731206 Makes me wonder what your sports sources are Gonzo.
Gonzo's source I assume: http://www.profootballweekly.com/PFW/NFLDraft/Draft+Extras/2007/wwhi041907.htm
I would assume that Randy Shannon will continue to gobble up a lot of South Fla talent, like his predecessors. The question will be can he go out and get the talent out of state like Butch Davis did to fill in the gaps, and how good a head coach will he be? Also if he does in fact get tough on the Canes in terms of having a very short leash for behavior, what affect will that have on recruiting? Will he miss out on some kids who previously went to Miami because he won't recruit them if they have character issues in high school? Willie Williams comes immediately to mind.
It's also quite inaccurate I would say wzt. Much like saying the Gators won't get anyone drafted in the first round. I guess that does just go to show what a great coach we have though, no first round draft choices and win the BCS Championship.
8) While it may play out that the NFL does not take a Gator in the first round...there's no denying that Urban Meyer marshalled his talent magnificently.....I would trade places taking the NC vs having first rounders. Randy Shannon was a standout linebacker for Miami in championship teams.....he bleeds Cane blood.....he comes from a family in a ghetto neighborhood as the only surviving sibling of four with the rest dying mainly due to drugs and gangs. He brought himself thru the University earning a degree and becoming the most admired defensive head coach in the nation having the most consistently tenacious defense in Div1A.........all the while recruiting kids from all over the nation and having first rounders for the last 13 years. Anyone that even remotely thinks that Butch Davis had a hand in bringing in these kids to Miami's D is hallucinating....its pure unalduterated fiction. These kids adore Randy when he walks in to anyone's living room....and the parents know that with Coach Shannon they have one who has lived the nightmare and succeeeded. Proof in the pudding is the gargantuan jump in the recruiting ranking that Miami had this season after Coker was finally let go. As I said, except for QB.....Miami is solid and deep.....watch out for Miami......AND.....Gator Bill.....I'll be in Gainesville for the UM-UF game next year.
I would have been very happy if the Canes hadn't hired Randy Shannon and he'd have come to South Bend to replace Rick Minter, or to Austin Texas to replace the fraud from Auburn.
"AND.....Gator Bill.....I'll be in Gainesville for the UM-UF game next year." Hmmm.....I strongly suspect your visit to be quite disappointing compared to the last Canes visit in the Swamp.
Moss at #17 and Nelson at #21 Two Gators taken before the first Miami player...... A BCS NC and first round draft picks thrown in for good measure...not bad.
A second NC in a million years.....hope you can catch up to Miami this century Ths 13th straignt yearly record of a first round pick......never even challenged ever The Canes will be back
With Tony Gonzalez being the last first rounder yesterday, Ohio State now leads all colleges in the number of first round picks at 66. USC follows with 65, Notre Dame and Miami are tied at third with 61 each. Michigan is a distant fourth with 42, tied by Florida. Don
Terry, the DE was of course Jarvis Moss who went at 17 to Denver, then Reggie Nelson went at 21 to Jacksonville. Ray McDonald went in round three in spite of several knee operations. By next year Gonzo I assume you are talking about 2008?
As much as I take pride in the Irish having lots of 1st rounders, as evidenced by Don's stats and lots of guys in the NFL and NFL Hall of Fame. I'm more focused on their college careers. Brady Quinn was one of the best Irish QB's of my lifetime, I loved his spirt, his dedication, and his toughness. He never played behind a very good OL, never had a great running game, and never had a good defense to help him out. Yet he was a big winner. Anybody who watched Purdue sack him, knock him down, harrass him, beat him up in his first start as a freshman knew the kid was a winner. He got up from each knockdown and just smiled at those Purdue guys and went back to work. I hope Brady has a great NFL career, but if he's another Danny Weurfel, or Eric Crouch, or Gino Torreta, or Jason White it won't diminish what he did at Notre Dame. He's a winner.
