You have to be amazed and impressed at what Cignetti has accomplished at IU even if he loses next week to Oregon. My question is can he continue to make all the right moves with the transfer portal. There have been teams like MSU and FSU who had 1 great year with Portal Players but couldn't sustain it. IU doesn't bring in the HS talent that Michigan and Ohio State bring in every year, at some point it would seem like that will catch up with him. I could be wrong and maybe his ability to evaluate and develop talent won't require him to be loaded up with 4 and 5 star players like do the rosters of Michigan and OSU
What makes answering this question hard is how long will he coach and could he leave Indiana for another school or NFL team? All one can say now is what he has done is incredible and historic. This is Indiana’s first Rose Bowl win after having fielded teams for over 130 years! If you look at his record, he has had a few down years but always had a winning record every season. So while this level of success may not be sustainable, I don’t see the floor dropping out from his teams like MSU or FSU unless he follows the Paterno path and coaches when he no longer capable of meeting the demands of the job.
According to a poster from X, Indiana only has 1 4 star recruit and has never had a 5 star recruit. Pretty sure the Hoosiers future recruiting will attract more elite athletes.
