to take the job at New Mexico, a Mountain West conference. When was the last time a coach at a B10 school with a good basketball history resigned to take a job at a Mid Major???? Alford to New Mexico
Wow! Very interesting. I understand why he is doing it. There are lots of folks in Indiana who wanted to see him coach here, but it was never meant to be. I wish him well. He's a class act.
I was very surprised to read this as well in USA this morning. Maybe he just needed a new challenge, but it still appears to be a step down in my opinion? Don
Alford <r>As a former Hoosier (that now loves in El Paso). I can't really say that I'm all that surprised by this. <br/> <br/> At one time I, and probably lots of other IU fans, envisioned Steve as taking the resigns at IU when Knight left. I mean, this guy WAS Indiana basketball thru and thru from the time they first put a basket ball in his hands. Born in Indiana, Indiana's Mr Basketball when he was a SR in HS, played for IU on a national Champ team. son of a coach, talked about his dream of someday returning to IU, did well in his first HC position.....but when offered the chance to go to Iowa...jumped at it. Then, turns down a chance to become IU coach when the fiasco with Knight went down. <br/> <br/> <br/> When Davis left I personally <U><s></s>did not<e></e></U> want Steve anymore as HC and still do not now, I think he is just not that good a coach and I beleive his stint at Iowa proves it. I think IU will be fine with K. Sampson.<br/> <br/> Good luck Mr Alford. IU and the big 10 will be just fine without you. Shoulda took your shot while you had a chance.</r>
I always liked Steve Alford except when he was kicking our @ss as a player or coach, and I wish him well.
