We're not gonna be able to replace those two, but as Don indicated Day seems happy with what we've got to step in, tho experience will be limited. Most are very high on Peoples and expect a productive year with big upside. Picked up a big back out of the portal from WVA CJ Donaldson that should provide a helping hand and some needed experience. Ryan Day likes depth at running back position as Buckeyes open preseason practice
First day in pads, the last of the practices open to the public. Sounds like Sayin has separated himself a little bit yesterday from most accounts in what many are saying is a legit QB competition. The best characterization I heard was this: Both can make all the throws, Sayin has the better release and is very accurate, Kienholz more athletic, more credible run threat, more consistent and exhibits more leadership. Sayin has a higher ceiling, more upside tho with greater variance, Kienholz has a higher floor, less downside. Too early to become anxious, but unless thee is some serious separation, we might very well be playing two QB's in the opener?
Don, at this point I'd be surprised if we didn't see them both. I've heard rumblings of a package designed for Kienholz for short yardage and goal line situations. As for Arch, as a young QB it's gonna be hard for him to be prepared for what he's about to face in his first big game on the road but I expect a great game in any event. It's a shame he won't get to see it at night and see the old girl in all her glory and frenzy
No surprise, Buckeyes and Longhorns are 1-2 going into the opener at Columbus. This years game of the century.
I probably could look back over the 20th century and come up with 3, 4, or even 5 games of the century. This century still has 75 years to go, which guarantees there will be several GOTC.
Remember the days when the Gators would be in the top tier. These days being at 17 is an improvement. Six of them are on our schedule.
Bill, seems like everything runs its course in cycles. I can wll remember how you throttled the Buckeyes in Urban' last year coaching the Gators all too well!
I remember that well also Don. Hopefully we can become competitive again. Napier has been a big disappointment.
Expect alot of things to shake out this weekend. Performance in the important scrimmage on Saturday seems to many to be a key decision point for staff in terms of position battles. Expect alot of personnel announcements at Days' presser Monday e.g., starting QB, starting 5 on OL, team captains and who is voted to wear the Block O jersey. Still alot of open questions with this team for me. Can the DL approach last year's group in terms of productivity? How much of a drop off will we see at QB and RB? Are the rumors of two stud freshman pushing to see the field at two of our most loaded position groups - corner and WR - realistic? Remember the names Devin Sanchez and Quincy Porter. While not last years tandem, I think the RBs will surprise on the upside and if the DL is serviceable, I think this defense can be as good if not better than last. I might be just self-validating my own thoughts (hopes?) that this team will go as far as the QB play can take them. Texas game can't get here too soon for me.....
Ditto for me as well BuckeyeT, I am anxious for the opening game and hopeful at the same time. A major challenge for us with a very tough opponent with a new starting QB, who will be under a considerable amount of pressure as well.
Yep, it's gonna be a big ask for any young, inexperienced QB in their first start in a big game on the road. Gonna be a great chess match between Sark and our DC Matt Patricia. I can't believe Sark is gonna ask the youngster to do too much. Patricia is a Belichek disciple, tons of experience and lengthy career in the NFL with 3 Super Bowl rings as a DC tho with poor results as a HC. He's got a lot of plug and play chess pieces with this group of personnel in Columbus at all three levels and time to prepare that will enable him to play multiple with tons of disguise in coverage for the young QB. If Sark/Arch find themselves behind the chains, it's gotta be risky business on the road with a big, feisty crowd and as such I'd expect a healthy dose of Q run early where Arch is quite capable. Sark is one of the best tho, I'm sure he's got plenty of tricks up his sleeve as well. What a great match-up....16 days
No longer subscribe to Longhorn sites so can't add a lot but a sense of respect and confidence. Arch not a first time starter given Quinn Ewers injuries and while he's not a Riley Leonard type of runner he's no slouch either. Team is loaded with talent and should play well.
