Jeff Weaver get's 8 million dollars per year for being a mediocre pitcher at best. It seems that the WS clincher trumps his body of work.
If you think it's crazy to pay Weaver $8MM to wear a World Series ring, imagine paying A-Rod $26MM to not wear one...
It's a simple matter of gettin a pitching coach that can work with you. The Cards have been in the WS mix the last 4 years with mediocre talent or wash outs from other teams as far as pitching goes. Carpenter being the exception.
Cards have had such tremendous offense the last 4 years that really about all they have needed was somebody who could get to the 6th or 7th inning and only give up 6 runs or so. Last year that strategy almost didn't work when the Card's couldn't hold late leads due to their bullpen. I'm sure AJ was seeing the Astro's in his rearview mirror that whole final month of the season. My point is that Weaver did a mediocre job, I mean his record during the season last year (or any year) was at best mediocre. He did win some playoff games, and the 5th game of the WS. That apparently is all the Mariners seem to remember about him. If he's a starter all year he's likely to have a 6-14 record, no complete games, and a 6.00+ ERA. I can't see that being worth 8M. Baseball is nuts.
In other words, they've played AL ball. I've often wondered if maybe the Cards and Twins switched souls five or so years ago.
 Its supply & demand. There aren't enough MLB caliber starting pitchers, so their value goes through the roof. One way to build a team in an environment like this is to stack the offense and win with mediocre starting pitching... Players in very short supply: 1. Left-handed starting pitchers 2. Catchers 3. Left-handed relief pitchers 4. Right-handed starting pitchers
That's almost as crazy as shelling out $100,000,000 for a Jap who has never thrown a pitch in MLB. What's the world coming to? 8)
Well cheer up. I'm sure those in Washington will be taking care of excessive executive salaries. After all, someone who is responsible for the employment of thousands of people and runs a multi-billion dollar company shouldn't be paid like a shortstop or pitcher. Where are our priorities?
That's good one Rick  I better brush up on my clip art and Photoshop skills or its going to be a long season for me.
