Here if the specific NCAA rule re spinning the ball: After a score or any other play … kicking, throwing, spinning or carrying (including off of the field) the ball any distance that requires an official to retrieve it. In this case, from what I can recall, the Texas receiver was lying on the ground face down and cradling the ball in his outstretched arm when he spun it. The spot where the ball was when spun never appreciably moved and the spinning did not move “the ball any distance that requires an official to retrieve it.” Because the spinning did not require the official to move to retrieve it, I thought there was no foul. Again, this is from my memory. Was not able to find a replay of the TD.
Well Notre Dame has moved up to number 6. A couple of well placed losses and they could be back in the playoffs. On the other hand Cincinnati could win out and if things go wrong not make the playoffs. I am kind of rooting for them. Alabama's way in is to beat Georgia. I have read a couple of writers who think Bama could make it with 2 losses. I don't think so. But when and if we go to a 12 team playoff then we will likely have more than one team with 2 or more losses.
I know, but you have to feel good about 59 unanswered points, no matter who is the opponent. Did Saban substitute freely in the 4th quarter? I ask because if so, it magnifies the "comeback" after the NMS field goal.
I am still remembering your runs in the 90's particularly when you destroyed the Gators. Do you think your coach survives and comes back next season? You have lost a lot of close games and things could be on the upswing.
"OR" is the operative word. Each of the 3 offenses on its own warrants the penalty regardless of what happens afterward.
Yeah actually I think we got down to the 4th or 5th string Qb, but like I said earlier, it's the start of the game that worries me. It doesn't hurt against NMSU but that kind of start against a quality opponent would result in a much different result. It also exposes weaknesses in our team, when a team NMSU marches down the field and scores and forces our offense off the field on the first possession.
You might be right, Sid. I interpreted the word “or” as being simply used as a conjunction connecting all four actions and imposing a penalty for engaging in any of the four actions if it causes the ball to move. But, the word could also be interpreted as being used disjunctively and adding the requirement of ball movement for carrying to be a penalty.
The Longhorns didn't really deserve to win that game. KU came in and just played lights out the whole game, played with passion and fire. Took it to the Longhorns who were stunned by a team like KU actually showing up to play. That penalty which no doubt helped KU in the OT since they got to go from the 15 instead of the 25, shouldn't take away from what they accomplished. That kid who caught the 2 point conversion in OT for the win, he's the story of the weekend. A walk-on and that was from what I read his first snap on offense. His parents were there to witness his moment of glory. Good for him and his family. A lifetime memory was created. Kudo's to the KU coach for having the guts to make that call, I assume he felt like it was on the road, his team didn't have much left in the tank and decided to go for the glory ..he was rewarded. A lot of people think Lance Liepold is a really good coach and questioned his sanity in taking the KU job. Good to see him get a big win. Maybe he'll get KU back to being respectable. One thing for sure I'm going to pay a little closer attention to TD celebrations for a while, I'm glad college players can't do all the stuff that they do in the NFL, but that one just shocked me.
Ole Miss in a good position for a New Year's 6 bowl after that win, A&M was previously looking like a New Years 6 team. Of course if Alabama loses to UGA in the SEC Championship game then they'll go to the Sugar Bowl instead of Ole Miss. That OU loss really makes the final 2 weeks of the Big 12 schedule exciting and full of opportunities for 3 teams, Baylor/OU/OSU. All have solid opponents and could lose at least one time, with OU and OSU playing each other, and they could end up playing 2 weeks in a row if OU wins. If OSU wins and Baylor wins out (not a guarantee) OU could be locked out of the Championship game due to tiebreaker losing to Baylor this past weekend.
A bit of a shakeup in the AP Top 10... 1. Georgia ... no brainer and should be #1 in the CFP 2. Alabama ...somebody has to be #2, and while the Tide aren't the same team they were last year they would be favored heavily over Cincinnati. 3. Cincinnati ...had a good win, not a great win but a good win over USF 10-0 is the key. 4. Oregon ...I think they are here based on their early season win at Columbus. I think Ohio State right now is the better team. But they are showing respect for the head/head on the field results. 5. Ohio State ...in good position. Big games coming up to solidify their status if they win, win out and they are in the CFP no doubt. Lose and go home. 6. Notre Dame ...This is where things get cloudy. I don't think there is much if any difference between the #6 through #12 teams. Put their names in a hat and just draw them out for their slot in the rankings. I don't believe the CFP will have ND this high though, likely to be just a spot ahead of last week at #8. 7. Michigan State ..again giving credence to the head to head. CFP will likely have them below Michigan again. 8. Michigan ...they lost to MSU on the field, but the CFP will put them ahead again, esp after that nice road win at Penn State. 9. Oklahoma State ... has to face OU in 2 weeks, but this is a good slot for them. I don't think even if they win out that they can make it to the CFP. 10. Ole Miss That win over A&M was very big, and could set them up for a New Years 6.
I just think we are a bit too flawed. We don't have great QB play, Jack Coan and Tyler Buchner have been good and early on they were operating behind a sieve of an OL and were sacked 7 or 8 times a game. Our defense again is good but esp now that we don't have our AA Safety Kyle Hamilton our whole defensive backfield is suspect. That and our schedule which pre-season looked pretty good and nobody was predicting us to be in the mix for the CFP, has turned out to be fairly weak. Wisconsin win looks better now, but they aren't the same team we beat earlier, maybe the same could be said about Purdue. Seems like a lot of flawed teams this year. Even Georgia who does have a Championship defense doesn't seem to be a great offense. I mean Stetson Bennett has done a good job but he's not an elite QB. As you have said, the Tide are a flawed team as well and nobody thinks Cincy would be 10-0 playing in the Big 10 or the SEC. I do think Ohio State is playing the best ball right now other than Georgia. This would be a very good year to have had a 12 team playoff.
Thanks, Kyle, but I have to agree with Terry. All his points are valid. Although we have a chance for a successful season, we're not a legitimate candidate for a 4-team playoff.
Earlier, Bill asked about Jimbo to L$U rumors he saw on a Gator site. I know enough to never think any coach is a guaranteed lock to stay anywhere, but I think he pretty emphatically answered today. Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher responds to ongoing LSU rumors: 'I ain't going nowhere'
