I figured I'd start a thread about the Olympics. They start on July 23rd, and athletes will start arriving in Japan soon, some probably already there. They have announced that there will be no fans at the any of the events, Japan is having a big Covid problem in Tokyo. No spectators will be allowed at any events because of Tokyo's new state of emergency, which will run from July 12 to August 22, according to BBC. Those dates span the entire of the Olympics in the city, which begin on July 23 and end with the closing ceremonies on August 8. International fans had already been banned from attending the Games months ago, but this new state of emergency is scraping plans for any fans because of rising COIVD-19 cases in the host city of Tokyo. I'm having a tough time getting excited for these games to tell you the truth. If there are no fans I wonder if they will bother with the usual opening and closing ceremonies?
I wonder how much money the Japanese are going to lose with these Olympics? No fans = No Tourists = No Money.
The Opening and Closing ceremonies are some of the events that the casual sports fan watches. Since the only revenue that Japan can hope to generate from these games is TV money, they probably will have as many air time events as possible. If these athletes are supposed to be living together in the Olympic Village, I see no reason that they can't march together in the ceremonies.
I agree with you in principal, but will probably watch to see if what you predict will happen. If so I will then join the boycott.
The golf could be interesting and I don't anticipate any demonstrations from our golfers. I'm not anticipating much anti-American conduct from our swimmers. Who knows.
I don't really expect much drama from the US squad, I'm sure one or two will do something to show support for BLM or some other social issue. But I'm thinking most will just stand on the podium and take their medals and not be controversial.
The men’s BB team lost consecutive exhibition games to Nigeria and Australia. The team is missing three players currently playing in the NBA finals (Booker, Middleton, and Holiday) but it will not be a gold medal cakewalk in Tokyo.
International Basketball has grown so much, think back to when we'd send a group of College Kids to play and they'd always win the gold. Now top players in the NBA come from all over the world, so much so that you see that a collection of NBA stars isn't guaranteed to win unless they play well as a team.
The PA announcer should just switch the text to will you now kneel for our National Anthem...that'd confuse them!!
Well…since I live in the south side of Milwaukee, if I cheer for the Mexican women, it’s kind of like rooting for the home team….
I heard on a sportscast that 3 of the players in the finals will join the Olympic team. Don't remember which ones.
The IOC has cleared the way for a mentally ill man to compete in women's weightlifting in the Olympics adding further to the circus atmosphere.
