Stanford won the women's tourney yesterday, another 1 point win for the Cardinal. I didn't watch the game I have to admit. Stanford coach Tara Vanderveer is the winningest women's coach, but she is only 4 ahead of Geno and she's coached 7 more years than he has..so he's coming for her. Something I did not know about Vanderveer...she was once the HC at Ohio State and is a disciple of Bobby Knight, in that while she was playing for IU. Never learned to throw a chair though or how to be an asshole who wins a lot. From her Wiki... At that time, the men's basketball team at Indiana was coached by future Hall of Fame coach Bobby Knight. While Knight was not a direct influence on VanDerveer's choice of school, he may have had an indirect effect.[citation needed] The Indiana women's coach, Bea Gorton, patterned her style of play and practices after Knight, and it was the observation of the style of play at the AIAW event that persuaded her to choose Indiana. The effect would become more direct. VanDerveer enrolled in Knight's coaching basketball classes at IU and regularly observed his team's practices[17]. VanDerveer carried what she learned from Knight to her practices at Stanford.[14]
According to CBS This is the 5th all time match up between pre-season #1 and #2 in Championship game. 1st was Cincinnati defeat of #1 Ohio State in 1962. Was that the Big O vs Jerry Lucas and Havilchek, Don? Again according to CBS, every one of them #2 won the game /Championship and Baylor was pre-season #2
Baylor defense was suffocating, there was no space for Gonzaga. While when Gonzaga was on defense there were gaps everywhere, plus Baylor was just shooting so well. Big accomplishment for the Zags to get it to at the half....they better have some good halftime adjustments if they want to win though.
Again according to CBS, every one of them #2 won the game /Championship and Baylor was pre-season #2[/QUOTE] No that was Paul Hogue, two years in a row!. We simply could not contol him on the paint. Unfortunately we did not schedule Cincinnati until 50 plus years later..
Had to look up who Paul Hogue was, and he was a great college player 2 NCAA Championships, and the Big O had none
Fat lady getting ready to sing, Baylor just had too much of everything tonight. They had shooting, defense, energy, were just a buzz saw.
Zags met their match this evening. Baylor has controlled the game from the get go.The Bears have had a great season and certainly deserved the win this evening, even if my post is a bit pre mature.
Big shock to me. Baylor starts strong and stays strong. When the Zags cut the lead to 10 at halftime I thought they were going to make a game of it. However Baylor comes out in the second half as strong as they started the game. Zags were never in it. Congratulations to the Baylor Bears.
I'm surprised UCLA has such long odds. I expect to see them back in the mix next year. Maybe they lose some key players.
