We've had a week off to rest up and finish up the semester finals. But we also lost 2 starting OL's this week, that's not a good thing. But it's football and most teams have to deal with injuries and that's where depth comes into play. The next men up are good players but don't have the experience of the guys they have to replace.

The OL has been a core strength for the Irish this year, we brought back a lot of starts, every player who started so far this year, started last year, a couple of them were coming off of injuries that had shortened their 2019 season but they had a lot of experience and were all highly recruited. It resulted in our having a really good running game and the QB not getting sacked a lot.

Zeke Correll the RS Freshman who will likely play the Center for Patterson now that Kraemer is out at RG as well, was a 4 star top 100 player and the #3 Center in the 2019 class. So it's your time kid!!

Josh Lugg who is likely to move into the RG slot has a fair amount of time on the field, he played a lot last year when both Hainsey and Kraemer went down was a 4 star close to top 100 player in the 2017 class. So he should be ready.

This leaves us thin with regards to playing time for any more injuries though. Guys like Kristofic, Gibbons, and Dirksen have pretty much only seen some garbage time playing. Hopefully we'll stay healthy on the OL going forward.

What I don't know and haven't seen comments on is the health of RB's C'Bo Flemster and Kyren Williams. Williams if you remember didn't play much against BC, he started but looked like he might have gotten a shoulder injury and didn't play anymore, also C'Bo who played a lot after Williams went out also was helped off the field towards the end of the game. Kelly didn't indicate in any of his pressers that they had injuries that would keep them from being 100% in he final 3 games of the season, but then a lot of coaches don't like to comment that a player is not 100% so as to not give the opposition anything to work with in terms of game planning.

That said, UNC is a terrific offensive team, they have a great young QB in Sam Howell and a couple of very good RB's and WR's. They should be tough to hold down to less than 30 points. But they have also given up a lot of points at times on defense, so hopefully the Irish can outscore them. Which is kind of what I expect, that this will be a shootout. that we'll need to score close to 50 to make sure we can win.

I an interesting tidbit about the Syracuse game, because of restriction and no students the lowest attendance ever at Notre Dame Stadium will be at the Syracuse game. Only faculty and staff will be allowed in the stadium and no tickets will be sold/made available to local fans.

Here's some scary numbers comparisons ...

Fighting Irish fans have raved about Tommy Rees' offense that has averaged 462 yards per game this fall. North Carolina averages 563 yards per game, which is fairly insane.

For comparison's sake, let's look at a few individual players.

Ian Book: 134-for-216, 1,818 yards, 11 touchdowns and one interception
Kyren Williams: 137 carries, 777 yards and 10 touchdowns

Sam Howell: 168-for-248, 2,631 yards, 23 touchdowns and six interceptions
Javonte Williams: 120 carries, 868 yards and 15 touchdowns
Michael Carter: 116 carries, 807 yards and four touchdowns.

    Kelly PC today

Patterson had foot surgery, went well, we'll have him back next year. He was having great season.

Tommy had emergency appendectomy, laparoscopic, caught in time, no rupture. Up and around already, football related activities next week.

Zeke Correll will be center, have great deal of confidence in him. Josh Lugg played quite a bit last year at tackle and will be the right guard. He's our sixth guy.

On Clarence Lewis as starter at field corner:

Him and TaRiq it's been battle all year. We do what's best for that unit and Clarence has done some things overall to earn starting position. TaRiq continues to work to get on field for us. It's been 1-A and 1-B.

The rest was needed more for mental than physical. We were in finals week and the mental rest helps us.

Tommy Tremble should be highlighted for his blocking. He plays so fast and aggressive. It's a lost art in many instances, and when people see his blocking it really stands out. I love watching him play.

On Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa and Shaun Crawford:

Myron got off to slow start and was banged up but rounding into player we thought he'd be and has had a great last three weeks. He's been holding double teams well. He's done his job and when singled up, he's made plays. Very difficult to block with single man.

On Crawford: We bounced him around at safety, it requires incredible communication. He's gotten better at it and will continue to evolve there. When teamed up with Hamilton, lot of pressure on him to do things tactically that opens up things for Hamilton. He has a lot on his plate, and we have a ton of confidence in him to continue his role.

On Zeke Correll getting up to speed as sophomore, and monitoring Clemson-FSU situation:

Zeke was 265 as freshmen, had to develop a coat of armor. He's at 288 at weigh in yesterday, between 285--290. Jarrett was 294. He's nimble, quick, smart, good in pass protection.

    On Braden Lenzy status:

You can pencil in him somewhere. Made progress. Moved from modified work to 11 on 11 work this week. That is next step, and we will see how that works out this week with him.

On C'Bo Flemister and Kyren Williams status injury wise.

C'Bo will practice today, he ran yesterday, optimistic he can play this weekend.

Kendall Abdur-Rahman has been an option.

Kyren had a little bit of an ankle injury, had no limitations in weight training. Don't expect any problems there.

Just a footnote to the outcry over the students that rushed the field after the Clemson game. Tests administered before the students left for home showed less positives that the week before the game. They apparently know how to protect themselves better than Father Hypocrisy.

Irish pick up another verbal, JoJo Johnson from Merrillville Indiana, he had been committed to Cincinnati but backed out of that about a month ago, he had a previous relationship with Coach Mickens who was his original contact with Cincy, and then when Mickens moved to ND he kept an eye on JoJo and they offered him last week. All the guru's predicted he'd commit almost on the spot. He's not a 4 or 5 star, but a 3 star that Lea and Mickens like a lot and see upside for him.

Barn burner in Chapel Hill, tie game 17-17 at half.

UNC offense is great, we'll have to out score them most likely. Lost our best player on defense, Kyle Hamiltoin, to a Targeting call.

Yeah we've found the cure. Just keep rushing the field and the pandemic will be over before the end of the season.

ND’s defense really clamped down after the 1st Q and Book was like Harry Houdini on those flip passes. Big victory for the Irish.

Excellent win by the Irish, offense was not especially pretty but they ground out 2 long drives including the one to close out the win.

Defense after the first 2 series really shutdown the powerful Tarheel offense. We did it without Hamilton, front 7 just got after Sam Howell and the UNC running backs.

Book has reminded me of Joe Montana from time to time, the most obvious similarity being that he's a flat winner. The flip was as Joe Montana-ish as it gets.

McKinley made some big plays tonight. Williams was mostly quiet but when it was time to shut the door, he was tough.

Well the Irish Defense didn't them anywhere near 500yds today. How about 298yds for the Tarheels and almost 500 for the Irish!

Mack Brown is a straight shooter. No excuses. I can see in that post game why he’s able to get the players he needs to build the program.

I really really like him. :)

I watched the game with my son yesterday. Notre Dame's defense is top shelf. Really impressed with #s 40, 7 and 35. Very aggressive. The LBs completely dominated the line of scrimmage. Book is a winner, that is for sure. We were laughing at the NC jersey names. We added a couple of names. "Who hit me" "What happened" "Mommy". "Stick a fork in Me". "Help me Jesus". It was probably the beer talking.

Irish Hockey gets the sweep of Michigan at Ann Arbor, but both basketball teams lose.

As expected Irish men lose to MSU, but the women unexpectedly lose to Ohio, they were missing 3 of their key players to be fair.

Ian Book certainly came in for some high praise from the ABC crew Saturday night, and Mack Brown praised him after the game as one of the best QB's he's seen. So now some ND fans are wondering if he'll get invited to the Heisman Dinner? I say that if he wins out and beats Clemson again in the ACC Championship game maybe, but not likely. Jones/Lawrence/Trask are just so dominant in stats that he isn't and then there are some position players like the TE from Fla (Pitts) and Najee Harris from Alabama who are having spectacular seasons, that I'll be surprised if he even gets a vote.
