Holy Hook 'n Ladder Batman!!! I mean how bad is it to be beat by Boise State with the Hook'n Ladder, then the halfback pass, and then the coup de'grace the Statue of Liberty play!! I'm surprised they didn't run the fumblerooski just to complete the humiliation!!! Oh yeah I guess you caught that the BSU RB is a Damien kid!! JO'Co probably coached him, or his dad or his cousin or somebody!! Terry
Damien kid (Ian Johnson) just proposed to the cheerleader on Nat'l TV....could it get any better than this!!
And he proposed to a cheerleader after the game. You hear Meyer give away the surprise? Hell of an exciting game, eh? The big comeback by OU, the interception that put the Sooners ahead, and on 4th and whatever with the game on the line BSU pulls out the tie with some trickeration. Then, in OT they employ more of the same when going for two. Gutty win.
Tremendous game. Boise State showed a lot of character. It looked for a while that they were hoping the clock would run out, but they really showed a lot of guts coming back like that. That team is well coached and the players well versed on the fundamentals. They truly deserve some respect. Their O Line and DLines were vastly underated.
One of the most exciting games I have ever seen. When Oklahoma intercepted the pass to go ahead by seven with about 1:30 left in the game, my thoughts were that Boise gave a great effort ,but that they were going to be heartbroken. When they hit the hook and ladder to tie the game, I could not believe what I saw. And then for Boise to score the tying touchdown with one trick play, and then to go for two and win it using a Statue of Liberty play was beyond words. And then to have the back who scored the winning TD propose marriage to the captain of the cheerleading team on National TV was a Frank Capra ending! What a Great Game!!
 Oh my God. I have never seen anything like this and 2007 begins my 51st year as a follower of football. This was certainly the greatest bowl game ever played and probably thee greatest football game played anywhere at anytime. After four quarters of kicking the wagon wheels right off the Sooners, Boise State collapsed with 1:22 remaining and lost both the lead and the... WAIT! Are you kidding me? A Hook & Ladder AND a behind-the-back Statue-of-Liberty? The Hook & Ladder is an old Damien joke. Any time that we're behind and desperate in the final seconds, the old alums in the stands (like me) start shouting, "Hook & Ladder!" "Hook & Ladder!" But the truth is, as far as I know, the last real Hook & Ladder at Damien was run by three crazy Irishmen in 1967: Tierney to O'Connor (me again) to Burke. As for the Statue-of-Liberty, I'd never actually seen one before in a real game. It was a play that went out in the late 1920's as far as I know and its supposedly "too slow" in developing, which is why nobody runs it anymore... When the game ended and Boise had pulled off its miracle, I went to the restroom and missed an interesting phone call, which my wife took. It was from my grandson Brendan. He was excited and the whole family was screaming on the other end. Ian Johnson is a family friend and former Damien HS player who has little brothers Brendan's age and they were all at the game. When he went into the endzone, he tried to throw the ball to them, then jumped up and down screaming and pointing at them. If you see the film, those people in the stands that he's pointing to are his mom, dad, sister and brothers. Brendan (age 10) was excited, because HIS friends were on TV! (LOL!) After that, Ian went to propose to his girlfriend, a Boise State cheerleader, to get her in on the great moment too. Ian Johnson is something special. He never stops working, caring, trying...his motor runs 24/7. In his spare time (!) he's an apprentice plumber making $10 bucks per hour. He also runs several small businesses, like knitting beanies which he sells to his teammates. The NCAA finally had to tell him to knock it off, but he's been knitting those things and selling them since he was at Damien. His goal, as I understand it, is to become the next Howard Hughes and I wouldn't bet against him. Guys who never stop trying are hard to beat...as Oklahoma just found out the hard way! Boise State is full of guys like Ian Johnson. Most of their Oline was under 6'2". The center was 5'10". The high school line that Ian ran behind at Damien was bigger than Boise State's line...much bigger. The way that Boise found him was the same way that they find everybody: by accident. The Boise coaches were at a high school game three years ago between Damien HS and Rancho Cucamonga HS. They were there to recruit Rancho's Terrell Thomas, who you saw today as a starting CB for USC in the Rose Bowl. Rancho was nationally ranked and Thomas, along with another kid, were the subjects of a notorious HS transfer scandal and the Boise coaches wanted to get him no matter what. (Terrell Thomas was born to be a Trog.) They had never heard of Ian Johnson; even though many Damien players had gone to Boise before, including at least one in Corey's class that I remember. To make a long story short, Damien bombed Rancho off the planet and the star of the game was Ian Johnson, whom they had never heard of. They immediately contacted the Damien coaching staff and did a great job of keeping him a secret for one year, before he burst upon the college scene this year, doing exactly what he had done at Damien...making the impossible look routine. So now what do we do sportsfans? As Ollie used to say, "This is a fine mess." All I know is, if Florida beats Ohio State, there will be only one undefeated team left in Div I, and they have wins over Oregon State, Fresno State, Hawaii, Utah, San Jose State, Nevada and Oklahoma among others. They will deserve at least half the National Championship. They've earned it. ...........JO'Co
Great story Jimmy ! I heard that 43 of Boise's players were from the state of California including one starter from NJ. Ian had a pretty good high school career , running for 3600 yards and a zillion TD's. This one goes down as one of the greatest endings in college football history. Just when you thought they were finished they come back to life. Lost in the shuffle was a great 2 point conversion by Oklahoma. I thought for sure BS had them beat after the 5 yard motion penalty set them back. Thompson could not have threaded the needle any better. What ever happened to our one and only Boise State fan? I wish he were still around!
You guys do realize that the genius Bob Stoops of Chokelahoma has lost 3 of his last 4 bowl games. He can't win the big game.
Actually, Jo Co, Urban Meyer used the hook-and-ladder for a TD when Utah cleaned Pittsburgh's clock in the Orange Bowl.
I'm not sure beating a two loss Oklahoma should qualify for a shot at the National Title game and Boise States schedule was kind of simple so it's hard to feel too sorry for them. I do like a play off system.
We just got back to Franklin NC from our sons house in Raleigh. Fortunately I did stay up to watch the whole game. It was unbelievable and one of the best games I've ever seen. Right up there with Texas and USC last year. Bosie State has been good for several years, but this may be the best they've ever been. Personally I hope they keep cranking out the wins and put more pressure on to get us a playoff. I pretty much agree with Tailbacks overall acessment, so let's get a playoff!
8) re: Final minutes of the game Congratz to everyone who went to bed. All you missed with 1:22 left in the game was FIVE TDs and two 2-point tries... re: Boise roster The Boise State roster contains nearly a dozen players from my immediate area. Its the place where the local kids go when the Pac10 doesn't want them. The roster has players from Damien, Chino, Rialto, Rancho Cucamonga, San Bernardino, and Brea. All from this area. re: Hook & Ladder I didn't see the Orange Bowl with Urban Meyer's play, nor did I see the NFL Hook & Ladder from 1984 that they were running on TV today. The last one that I saw had me in the middle of it and I didn't get a good look at that one neither. After I pitched the ball, somebody knocked the crap out of me and I spent the rest of the play buried face down in the muddy grass... ..............JO'Co
  Good gravy! I just saw all of my in-laws on TV! Fox News, Channel 11 in Los Angeles just gave a live report from "LaVerne"...they were actually in next door San Dimas, at a huge neighborhood celebration for Ian Johnson. The woman they interviewed, saying how "romantic" Ian's proposal was is Toni Callen. She's my daughter's mother-in-law and all the parties that little Ian used to attend were at her house. She's also Brendan's other grandmother besides Mrs. JO'Co... This isn't my Andy Warhol moment...but it might be hers... .........Living With the Romantic and Famous......JO'Co
