Pat Forde had an interesting column on SI about how this pandemic can affect Notre Dame's schedule and the age old question, should Notre Dame join a conference in football? The article goes through the schedule and speculates whether or not the teams would chose ND if there is a conference only +1 schedule. It's an interesting bit of speculation, and one that could leave ND scrambling to convince some teams to play them.

Well ND announced today that Fall Classes will begin on campus Aug 10th, speculation is that Football players can return early July to begin training. Fall schedule will be different though, no fall break and the semester will end at Thanksgiving. Lots of other things are planned. Press release is at the link. I hope it goes well, but I am worried.

Notre Dame to begin fall semester on campus the week of Aug. 10

One other thing and it's not ND specific. But I have had friends say they were considering not sending the kid this fall and delaying the freshman year till either January or Sept 2021. But they found out that if they chose to do so their acceptance was revoked and they would have to reapply.

APR scores are out and Stanford and Notre Dame lead all FBS in the number of programs with perfect APR score. Both had 13 programs. Irish have been at the top of the APR rankings since it was implemented 14 years ago. There is another academic ranking called GPR that probably will come out some time in the near future, different metric to measure academic progress. There were 15 schools who failed and will be penalized with post season ban. None of them are members of a major conference.

Congratulations to the Irish athletes who worked hard on and off the field.

Notre Dame’s number of perfect scores has ranked either first or second among all FBS programs for 15 consecutive years. Notre Dame led FBS schools in 1,000 scores in 2019 (with 13, tied with Stanford), 2016 (with 16), 2015 (with an institutional record 17), 2013 and 2012 (both with 12), 2009 (with nine), 2008 (with eight, tied with Duke) and 2006 (with 14, tied with Boston College). Notre Dame finished second in number of 1,000 scores in 2018, 2017, 2014, 2011, 2010 and 2007.

Father Jenkins wrote an op ed in the New York Times on Covid-19 and reopening the Notre Dame Campus. Nothing really new here, but it was a good read. I'm sure some or many can disagree with him on these things, but also all across the country Universities and Colleges are coming to the same or similar conclusions. That is we need to move on and attempt to start returning to some degree of normalcy.

Niele Ivey has announced her staff, they parted ways with Beth Cunningham who was a key member of Coach McGraws staff and a great Irish basketball player in her own right. Niele brought in another great Irish basketball player in Coquese Washington to take her place. Carol Owens and Michaela Mabrey (also a Irish basketball alum) were retained as well.

Irish add former Stanford RB, Trevor Speights. He's a grad transfer with 2 years left to play. Can't say I'm overly excited about this, he had a tremendous HS career in Texas but didn't really do much at Stanford, some due to injuries but even when healthy he never really did much. He does have speed though! o_O

Well it appears that the Notre Dame /Wisconsin game at Lambeau Field might not happen. Not at Lambeau, possibly will revert to on campus.

Lots of folks were really looking forward to the game, sort of bucket list thing

Everything is still up in the air Don. The Naval Academy AD said this...

Naval Academy athletic director Chet Gladchuk was disappointed the game could not be played in Ireland, but said in a press release the health and safety of all involved was the highest priority. Gladchuk added there are still many unknowns surrounding the college football season as a whole.

“I am expecting that we will still be able to play Notre Dame as our season opener, but there is still much to be determined by health officials and those that govern college football at large. Once we have a definitive plan in place, we will announce the specifics pertaining to the game," Gladchuk said in the release.

In a Zoom Conference Call, Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick had this to say about the season.

When he was asked what boxes would need to be checked for the NCAA to give the all-clear for the 2020 college football season to commence, Jack Swarbrick was able to shed light on a relatively unknown aspect of the decision-making process.

“The NCAA doesn’t make it,” the Notre Dame Director of Athletics said during a Zoom conversation with season-ticket holders recently which also included Associate Athletic Director Ron Powlus.

While NCAA does have the authority to make some critical decisions leading up to the season, such as approving workouts, the organization won’t be making the ultimate go/no-go call.

“Unlike basketball or hockey or anything else, football is really run by the conferences, not the NCAA,” Swarbrick explained. “So, while the NCAA sets broad policies, it’s up to the conference commissioners to decide about return to play and return to practice.”

Swarbrick remains in consistent contact with those conference commissioners and reiterated their mutual goal of starting the season on time, although he added they’re “looking at every possible scenario.”

“Do you delay the start of the season and slide it later?” he asked. “Do you shorten the season? Might you put some of the season in the second semester into the spring? What does it mean for the bowls and Playoff?

“All of those things are being discussed daily, but the primary place they’re discussed is with the conference commissioners.”
