Steve Spurrier has some advice for Clemson head coach Tommy Bowden - if you don't like your salary, ask your boss for a raise.

A couple of weeks ago, Bowden complained that Spurrier was rewarded for a seven-win season with a contract extension and $500,000 per year raise, saying "I'm at a place where seven (wins) gets you fired. He's at a place where seven gets you a raise."

Spurrier ended his two-week silence about Bowden's comments on Friday after a conditioning workout at Williams-Brice Stadium.

"I didn't get a raise because we won seven games," Spurrier said. "Our athletic director had previously mentioned that he wanted to redo my deal because he thought I should be at a level with those other guys, Mark Richt, (Phil) Fulmer, (Tommy) Tuberville. It just got to the point with the Alabama and Miami rumors that we ought to do it right now and get it out and end the rumors."

Spurrier's annual guaranteed compensation was increased to $1.75 million per season and his contract was extended by a year through the 2012 season. Bowden's contract with Clemson, which has four years left, pays him $1.2 million per season.

Clemson lost three of its final four regular season games, including the 31-28 defeat to USC, and plays Kentucky in the Music City Bowl in Nashville on Dec. 29.

"If Tommy Bowden wants a raise, he should just ask his A.D. if he thinks he's as good a coach as Mark Richt, and me, and Fulmer and Tuberville and those guys," Spurrier said. "That's the only reason I got a raise. They think I'm that good a coach."

In Spurrier's eyes, the worst Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips can do is say no.

"If (Bowden) wants a raise, he ought to go in and say, 'Am I as good a coach as all them guys?'" Spurrier said. "And then his A.D. will probably say, 'Why sure you are.' Then he'll say, 'Well, why don't you pay me like that?' And they'll probably pay him like that. Or else they'll say ... it could be the other answer, right?

"I got a raise because my bosses thought I should," Spurrier said. "It's as simple as that. He ought to go talk to his bosses. Your bosses pay you whatever they think your value is."

Spurrier is 14-10 in two seasons at USC and will lead the Gamecocks into a Dec. 29 Liberty Bowl matchup with Houston in Memphis. He is the first coach in school history to lead USC to bowl games in his first two seasons as head coach.

Interesting stuff. I'm betting that Bowden does not approach his AD.

No Terry, My guess is it's someone who is getting back at the psycho who use to post here that turned in Clemson for violations.

I saw that article, Bowden might keep his big mouth closed next time.

At least that would be my advice to him.

    And it is classic Spurrier.

Someone caught this picture of Bowden.
