So for the Orange Bowl I finally understand the selection of UVA, they were the #2 team and thus guaranteed the ACC slot, didn't matter what the score of the ACC Championship Game. Sugar Bowl is going to be the #2 SEC team vs the #2 Big 12 team, as it was last year. Big 12 and SEC Champions would be here if they weren't in the CFP. Rose Bowl is going to be Big 10 #2 (Wisc) vs Pac 12 Champion since Oregon is not in the CFP. Cotton Bowl is Top Group of 5 vs Penn State. Not exactly sure but I assume it's Penn State since they are the highest ranked available Power 5 team, if Wisconsin had fallen below Penn State, which they didn't, then I guess Wisc would have gone to the Cotton Bowl and Penn State to the Rose Bowl. If some how the Irish has slipped up to the #10 slot then we'd have likely gone, or this year if Utah had not fallen to #11 I guess the Utes would have gone. It's just all driven by contracts, no more roving bowl committees in matching blazers making deals.
I blame Swarbrick for ever allowing a contract to be signed that allowed a 10 win Notre Dame team to slip down to the Camping World Bowl.
Corey The problem is that the 10 win ND team is not rated highly by the committee. Not much Swarbrick can do to protect a team that completely shits in the bed in a big game.
Agreed. At the same time, he can negotiate more friendly terms for these bowl games. I was reading that not only is it tough for ND to go to the Orange Bowl, but they can only go twice over some extended period of time. Remember when a .500 ND team went to the Fiesta Bowl?
If the playoff expanded to 8 teams, with Power 5 Champs guaranteed a slot along with the highest ranked Group of 5 team. It'd look like this. 1. LSU - SEC 2. Ohio State -Big 10 3. Clemson -ACC 4. OU - Big 12 5. Oregon - Pac 12 6. Memphis - Group of 5 7. Georgia 8. Baylor. Play round 1 Weekend of the 20th , Then Round 2 and the Championship on the days already scheduled.
Question: what if the highest ranked group of 5 team wasn't in the top 25? Are they still guaranteed a playoff spot?
My school of thought here makes me wonder how the current conferences in the playoffs on a regular basis, will view an eight team playoff. I realize the fans want eight teams, but current powers including Ohio State will have to give up some of the money? I have no idea how much more money an eight team playoff would generate? It's almost like politicians not wanting to give up any turf in an election.
So.what.would happen if.Virginia beat Clemson? You either have to want the 4 or 6 or 8 best teams or you dont. Right now if you lose 2 games.you are out. Fair?
RE: an 8 team playoff.... These players are probably already skittish about possible NFL killing injuries in a 2 game playoff. They are not going to want to play three playoff games and besides.... who really thinks that teams 6 through 8 have any real shot at winning 3 games in a row against murderer's row. Maybe you could have teams 4 and 5 have a play-in game.... and that could erase more chances of any controversy.
Any requirement that all conference champions are.included will result in possible ridiculous results.
Either a conference means something, or it doesn't. To me, that's the hypocrisy that has always been at the underbelly of the BCS and now the 4 team playoff. To go 8 teams, we're talking about 1 more week. 1 more game, that's it. With 8 teams, you get all of the major conference champions and 3 wild cards. It puts the drama on the field and not in the ESPN studio. I absolutely love the FCS, DII and DIII playoffs. Literally, everyone else can do it. It's only the robber barons who don't want it.
More than you think.... but just so we're clear, you are basically admitting you're nothing more than a farm system for the NFL? If that's the case, then drop all the ********, and play a playoff... because even the minor leagues manage to have an actual playoff champion. Nice strawman btw.
So if Clemson wins the Nat'l Title that will mean they would be on a 30 game winning streak, and other than the Irish their ACC schedule is one that they will be favored in every game, they will be favored against the Irish as well of course even in South Bend. If they run the table in the regular season next year they will be at 43 games..challenging the OU 47 game winning streak. Now even when you are the favorite and have as strong a roster as Clemson does, it takes a bit of luck during games, like that failed 2 point try by UNC that would have hung a L on them, and it takes a bit of luck with injuries as Alabama can attest to this year. But they have an outside shot.
Terry, Alabama lost.to #1 by 5 points and # 12 by 3 points. We just didn't get the luck and we had way too many penalties and turnovers and our defense was too inconsistent. Everybody has injuries and with our recruiting classes we should have been able to overcome them especially at the end of the season. In the past few years we got the luck and executed better. Clemson has a long way to go before finishing this year undefeated much less next year.
If Clemson mows through Ohio State and LSU... to the eye test themselves very strong NC contenders..... then by all means they should be acknowledged as one of the all time greatest dynasties. However they risk quite a smudge on their rep given their soft schedule should they fail. Corey... there has been only 7 non FBS selections out of the 250 total of NFL first 50 drafted players going back the last five years. That's 243 to 7 that would have a two game max on playoff games to win their division's National Championship.
You clearly don't know how the NFL works financially. It would take way more time to explain the CBA and how it all works than I am willing to go into at the moment, or in the near future. There are something like 261 non-FBS players on NFL 53-man rosters in 2019. It breaks down to something like 1 in 7 or one in 8 players in the NFL are non-FBS. To suggest there isn't a lot of NFL talent 'risking it' on the field in the FCS, DII and DIII playoffs is both ignorant and biased.
