That's an interesting matchup, Michigan beat UCLA earlier this year. This won't be a midweek matchup though, it'll be 1 on 1s.
looks like double headers and Monday action. I don't know why they were starting on Saturday? At least Vandy and Duke are starting on Friday afternoon.
Michigan defeats UCLA 3-2 in a very exciting finish! No offense for UCLA until the 9th inning and it looked like they would win another come from behind game.
Duke was leading Vanderbilt when I went to bed and this morning I see Duke scored 18 runs in their winning effort. Weather in the South does not look good for their games scheduled for today.
Some great college baseball yesterday in the Super Regionals. Vandy freshman pitches a no-hitter, Michigan had the game won against UCLA but left fielder dropped a fly ball to end the game in the 9th and the Wolverines lose in 12 innings to the Bruins 5-4. The field will be reduced to seven teams today or tomorrow, who will comprise the field for the College World Series in Omaha!
Very surprised to learn this morning that Michigan handled UCLA late and will advance to the college world series. Congratulations Bobda!
Big surprise that Michigan made the CWS that's for sure. But maybe it was karma for that dropped fly ball in the previous game. When was the last time the B1G had a team in the CWS? Texas Tech is going to the CWS, they have as an athletic program quite a spring/summer. With their Basketball going to the final four, their mens track program winning the NCAA Outdoor championship and now Baseball going to the CWS. Scott is no doubt pleased.
Indiana was the last Big 10 team to go to Omaha in 2013. The Big 10 has 6 championships (see asterisks below). 9 Big 10 teams have combined for 54 wins in Omaha. Big 10 play is getting better; NCAA tournament bids validate Big Ten’s baseball growth Michigan: Seven appearances (1953*, ’62*, ’78, ’80, ’81,’ 83, ’84) I guess 8 now. Gophers: Five appearances (1956*, ’60*, ’64*, ’73, ’77) Ohio State: Four appearances (1951, ’65, ’66*, ’67) Indiana: One appearance (2013) Iowa: One appearance (1972) Michigan State: One appearance (1954) Wisconsin: One appearance (1950; Badgers dropped baseball after 1991 season) Note: Penn State (five), Nebraska (three) and Rutgers (one) also have appeared in the CWS, but before they were Big Ten members.
Is there a more frustrated baseball program than FSU? Mike Martin has taken FSU to 16 CWS, and they swept LSU in Baton Rouge, Martin is 0-16 in CWS championships. The guy before him was 0-7 in CWS championships. Question: Will USC baseball ever get back to where they were under Rod Dedeaux?
Irish fired their baseball coach and will be looking for his replacement. I hope they make a good choice we can be a good program, Vanderbilt could be our model. I've read where they overcome the high tuition as a negative in recruiting with academic scholarships to help cover what a partial scholarship doesn't cover. Both Vanderbilt (recently) and Stanford for a long time have had good baseball programs in spite of high tuition and academics. We just have to make the commitment to following their lead.
