HS football players getting money for their autograph? Even if it's not it would seem to be a NCAA issue for any that plan on playing beyond High School. Seems like Labron James got nailed and was temporarily ineligible in Ohio because some guy in Ohio gave him a Jacket in exchange for his autograph. I don't think it was Stu though! High School Clebrities
Terry If his HS season and elligibility are over, and he hasn't signed a LOI with a college yet, who do you discipline?
Apparently it is not legal!! This reminds me a little of the incident last year where a Texas A&M recruit made a comment about A&M handing out money or something like that, that blew up pretty fast.
They have a Championship game coming up. About 6 starters from that team, inclucing Rainey, are Gator commits. Just FYI.
A. I hope that doesn't affect his collegiate eligibilty. B. If not, I hope the Gators sit him down and explain the rules to him. C. I hope he's smart enough to follow them.
I just saw a comment on another sports baord about Troy Smith accepting "booster money" and being ruled ineligible for a past Alamo Bowl. I "googled" the topic and found the following story: http://ohiostate.scout.com/2/333064.html Hmmmm .... didn't remember this happening.
It also caused him to miss the opening game of the 2005 season. First action was in the Texas game after Zwick was ineffective.
I couldn't agree with your three points more Stu. I'm hard pressed to consider this kid a professional. Lakeland is a small town and they love their football team. I hope for his sake that this blows over. And that he has learned a lesson.
Terry, is it O.K. for Texas high school players to do TV commericals? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ8jjL0f3fE
Yes his case was reviewed by a select panel of judges and legislators who were on the list of potential "free" Longhorn Ticket recipients !!
IMO, Gaterz, it really hurt his developement... He won the starting job, then missed the bowl game, then came back as the back-up quarterback and did not start the Texas game. He was good but it took time and experience and he was much improved during the second half last year. I can't remember the numbers, but it seems to me that the decrease in his interceptions was remarkable in his later games last year, leading into what he has accomplished this year. One wonders what last year could have been like if he had not done that and had to sit out. I think he is a good kid, got sucked in by a booster (who has been banned from any contact with the program) and paid the price. To my knowlege they have never fully publically released what he took, but it was all turned in to the NCAA
Actually I've been told that it was his Uncle's store and that he wasn't paid for it, but he could never do that as an NCAA athlete. You remember when Steve Alford appeared in a charity calander while he was at Purdue? I forget the details, but he didn't recieve any money but he still got some punishment.
If a frickin' IU Hoosier ever appeared in a Purdue calendar the calendar should have been burned and Alford banned for life!
I sure think there is a difference between big $$$$ being passed under the table and a kid who goes downtown in his small town and someone gives him a few bucks. Having said that, sometimes little transgressions can lead to big ones in the future and become a big problem. I hope this kid gets to play his final game and has learned a lesson. And they may have trouble finding witnesses anyway. I do believe Meyer will set him straight on the standards he expects.
Damn, I was in New Orleans in 87 to watch the tournament and thought Alford led the Hoosiers to victory! I guess those hurricanes I bought on Bourbon Street damanged my vision and brain cells to the point that what I thought was crimson and cream was actually black and gold. Anyway, Stu, congrats to Purdue for winning the championsip that year. 8)
Ya know .... now that UF's in the big game, I sure regret all those folks smoking weed when Marcus Thomas was in their presence. Sure coulda use him again' that very productive OSU offense!!!
