The NCAA has waived the academic eligibility requirements for the Jan 8th bowl game. Under the current regulations, a player would not be able to play in a bowl game if he was ineligible based upon fall quater or semester work and his college/university had started the new quarter/semester. I will not go into specifics, but a number of schools--in the past--had players participate in the bowl game knowing that they would be ineligible once school started. The problem with this game (Jan 8th) is that school will have started for OSU (and maybe Florida). As I understand it, the "waiver" is for this year only and schools have been told that next year the "old rule" will go back into effect. Stephen
In the past schools have left players who they couldn't verify eligiblity before the bowl game at home. I know that one year the Univ of Houston left almost 5 players at home because their academics were shaky and they (the universities) had to sign off on this and there are penalities for playing an inelgible player.
