flops for the upcoming season. Everyone with a pulse has an opinion on who is number one and everyone with a breath left will tell you who should be in the CFP, so let's do something different... Who is a gonna suck that wasn't suppose to suck? I'll start 1. Florida State 2. UCLA 3. Miss State 4. Florida 5. Texas Bubble teams: Clemson and Notre Dame
hahahaha so many chickens here who don't wanna play. Thank you Stuf! Personally, I think Purdue will surprise this year and be a upper mid-tier bowl team.
Suck is a strong word when talking about teams who are usually good and expected to be again. These are my choices of team who I expect to disappoint. 1. Florida State : Willy Taggart? Good luck and Goodbye. 2. Oklahoma : Mayfield is a lot to replace 3. Notre Dame : Huge losses on the O-Line. Inexperienced and short handed backfield. Wimbush a big question mark. 4. Mississippi State: House of Cards 5. Ohio State : 2018 is going to be unsettled no matter what. Major talent losses each of the last two years.
To be a disappointment I guess you'd have to be a pre-season top 25 type of Team. 1 Alabama(61) 0-0 1621 — 2 Clemson(3) 0-0 1547 — 3 Ohio State(1) 0-0 1458 — 4 Georgia 0-0 1452 — 5 Oklahoma 0-0 1288 — 6 Washington 0-0 1245 — 7 Wisconsin 0-0 1243 — 8 Miami 0-0 1091 — 9 Penn State 0-0 1050 — 10 Auburn 0-0 1004 — 11 Notre Dame 0-0 892 — 12 Michigan State 0-0 870 — 13 Stanford 0-0 768 — 14 Michigan 0-0 752 — 15 USC 0-0 691 — 16 TCU 0-0 530 — 17 Virginia Tech 0-0 524 — 18 Mississippi State 0-0 407 — 19 Florida State 0-0 328 — 20 West Virginia 0-0 310 — 21 Texas 0-0 265 — 22 Boise State 0-0 261 — 23 UCF 0-0 259 — 24 LSU 0-0 254 — 25 Oklahoma State 0-0 168 —
1. FSU - Free Willie 2. Michigan - brutal schedule 3. Georgia - lost supreme talent 4. Ohio State - Urban crisis 5. LSU - tough schedule.... ED O on the hot seat
You know Dave, you make a good point. I've had my finger on the trigger of Georgia. I just don't know if their schedule will expose what all they lost. They beat ND because of the incredible efforts of their seniors who are gone. They beat Oklahoma only because of those same guys. Their damn near took down Alabama because of them... and they are gone.
I'll add a "me too" on to that. The media seems to believe because Kirby was with Nick for so long he'll just reload like Bama always has. Hmmm... that's a mighty big leap in my mind. They might, but you gotta show me first.
Hell, they have talking heads kicking around the idea of replacing Fromme with the kid outta HS and they are convinced they won't miss Eason at all.... lotta hubris for Athens.
UGA has been recruiting like crazy. They continue to sign full, highly ranked classes. We'll see. Not only do you have to "reload" but you also have to get lucky 2 or 3 times a season.
Georgia's schedule itself wouldn't be a reason for the dawgs to disappoint... it's mostly that loss of elite talent although that game at S. Car. early in the season with new players on the field could be very tricky.
Georgia's recruiting wins are all freshmen this year so while they may contribute it's not the same as Jr/Sr All-American's first day NFL draft picks. Last year was the first year that UGA just killed it in recruiting, they are doing it again. A couple of more years of this and they will have Alabama level talent and depth.
I don't know that I can pick the top flops but a few possibilities are UCLA Michigan UCF Oklahoma I expect Florida to not only not flop but have a pretty good year. Very happy with our new coach. Georgia may be down but the way they are recruiting they are going to be very formidable for the near future. I could be very wrong about UCF. One writer on Sportsline wrote about the best team in each state and had UCF best in Florida.
The problem with this question is you have to gauge expectations then actual performance. What are Auburn's expectations? Is an 8-3 season a disappointment or just about right?
You'd figure that, on the surface, 8-3 would be on the flop side. However, if you told them they could be 8-3, beat Alabama and play in the SECCG... I think they'd take it. Barners... smh
Corey, but would that be a flop? I absolutely hate that Alabama lost to Auburn last year. My wife's family won't acknowledge the Alabama NC, they just keep bringing up the fact that Auburn beat Alabama. I'm not saying our season was a "flop" by any means but it can never go down as our greatest season either because we lost to THEM! :?
If Florida lost to Georgia or Tenn and yet won the NC it would feel much the same.... not quite great. UF won the NC losing to FSU ( but whaled on them later for the NC ), at |Auburn in a ref marred loss, Ole Miss ( who really cares... no one at UF anyway ) so three NCs but no perfection. We'll take those three NCs anyway....
Unbeaten is just very hard to do, you need a little luck. I remember the Vol team that won the Nat'l Championship was very lucky to get away with the win vs Ark when the Ark QB who if I remember correctly was really just trying to run out the clock on the Vols fumbled and gave them the opening for a late win. How do you explain Clemson losing to Syracuse last year, Syracuse was a terrible team. Unbeaten's almost always have at least 1 game that lady luck smiles on them.
KP, As I understand the Barner mind... 8-3 AND meeting those conditions would be a good season. If they get beat by Bama, don't play for the SECCG and get smoked in a bowl, I think they'd call it a flop this year.
Let me just say this, if my team wins the National Championship am going to feel great no matter how many losses we had.
