Notre Dame is widely considered a liberal institution. Now it may find itself in a moral dilemma as one of its own, Amy Barrett, finds herself being openly attacked as a devout Catholic and therefore unfit to serve as a SC Justice if nominated by the President. This is yet another pre-emptive hit job by the Democrats as they anticipate the worst. They also tip their hand as to what they really fear. They are obsessed with Roe v Wade.
I think the obsession over Roe v Wade is frothing on the right, don't kid yourself. For that matter, there are Democrats who hold strong opinions against Roe v Wade. Here abortion is the absolute worst thing that Democrats stand for, until their little grand daughter comes up knocked up at 16 by the local basketball star. Then it's a family secret.
I question whether there are democrats who oppose Roe v Wade. I think it's pretty much the litmus test for being elected as a democrat. I think you'd be in deep trouble if you even said that personally you are against abortion but still support Roe v Wade. All of the candidates that Trump has now, Kethledge, Barrett and Kavanaugh would be a threat to Roe v Wade. Democrats know this and will hammer them on this issue. It's almost the only thing that matters to Democrats. But even if Roe v Wade is reversed doesn't it just mean that it reverts to the States as far as abortion laws? So it's not like abortion is likely to go away in the US. There will be different laws/regulations state to state. I can't imagine that California or Mass will have anything other than the most liberal laws regarding abortion and Texas will have more stringent laws/regulations. In attacking Barrett, Feinstein already has made an issue over her Catholicism, I have no doubt that will continue should she be the nominee. Should she fail to be confirmed would that constitute another litmus test 1) must say you support Roe v Wade 2) Must not be Catholic or say you don't agree with the Church on this issue?
He seems perfect. They say he is more qualified than half the Justices already there. The Democrats broke into an immediate whining and crying session so that substantiates my opinion of him.
All of those in the final group were eminently qualified, there was not a Harriet Miers in the bunch. A poster who was a classmate of Hardiman's at ND posted something on the NDNation Political Board about him, it made me hope he might be the nominee. But Kavanaugh is the man, he's very qualified, and really sort of a Moderate who should be confirmed. As Krebs said though there will be bitter opposition to his appointment by Democrats, as they continue to be butt hurt by the treatment of Garland by the Senate Republicans.
yeah, I had read some things he'd said about Roe v Wade that immediately made me think that this is where the Democrats will draw the battle line with his confirmation. He'll get in though.
I think he met with some senators last weekend. Meanwhile, Dems will stall as long as possible. They're currently interviewing his 1st grade teacher to see if he threw spitballs in school.
When my son was going through the vetting process for the New Jersey State police they sent investigators to his old high school where they learned that he brandished a water pistol in the hallways as a freshmen. He was questioned extensively about it before finally passing muster.
