I thought ND was one of them and UCLA was a natural for the other one since they spent so much time at #1 during the Wooden years, I just didn't remember UCLA football ever being #1.

That was the John Shumate/Gary Brokaw team that upset UCLA. Somehow I didn't think they captured the # 1 ranking. It was short lived.

You Domers should be proud of me. I was a huge Domer basketball fan back then.

    AJ,

Did you go to Westfield High or Linden HS?

Wow! As clearly as I recall that epic game, I never thought that ND's BB team had ever been rated #1, even for a week. Thanks, AJ! :D

TJ good ole Thomas Jefferson high school, an all boys public school.

That was before they consolidated TJ and Battin HS to make one large coed HS called Elizabeth HS.

HS sucked , We had 1400 boys in 3 classes. There was no freshman class. Battin was an all girls school with about 1700 girls.

Back then TJ had some great basketball and football teams. Back then Union County had some great sports teams.

I lived in Westfield after graduating. You remember QB Dave Brown and Billy Ard from the Giants? Butch Woolfolk ? Tony Stewart from Union ? ( Iowa Star) Richie Wood ( 2 time all american USC ? ) Union also had a couple of kids go to PSU. There were more, just can't think of them off the top of my head. Willie Wilson ( Summit) KC Royals came later. And then Renaldo Nehemiah & Jeffrey Hammonds from Scotch Plains. That's where my son went to HS.

It's still a good area for producing 1A talent, but not as good as the 70's.
Plainfield/Piscataway ( Plainfield refugees) has become more prominent in recent years Anthony Davis ( rb UW) and that big LT forget his name but # 1 on everyone's recruiting list.

Elizabeth HS has sent quite a few to the big 10 QB Kaliq ( Minny) and a few others to UW,Purdue, MSU & Iowa but what a drug infested dump that HS is now. It is so bad, they have metal detectors at the front door checking for arms.

ST. Patricks (Eliz) is hot on basketball , Al Harrington ( Pacers), Dalembert ( 76ers) and this guy Caracter who is supposed to be 10 times as talented as Harrington. That kids has some issues however and has played at 3 or 4 different HS.

Vitale gave half away last night

<r>I was watching the Duke basketball game last night and Dick Vitale mentioned the fact the ND held the #1 spot in both Basketball and football. I thought he said ND was the only school to do it but I'm not sure. <E>:D</E></r>

Gators had a shot at it this year with their Basketball team being #1 and the football team only losing to Auburn. If they had beaten Auburn and finished undefeated they would have played at least for #1, I don't think they would have been able to get to #1 in the regular season the Bucks were too solid.

I do remember that week in '74 when the Irish upset UCLA. Commish was born the day of the rematch.

    Don,

So we've established that ND was one of the two teams. Who was the other?
