In the spirit of the old days of college football with Tom Osborne, Bo Schembechler, Woody Hayes, John McKay and yes maybe even Paul Bear Bryant the University of Iron Fisted Florida has seven players suspended for a one time use of a credit card who may get the felony part of the charges dropped and may yet be able to return to the field.... and yes that includes star running back Jordan Scarlett and WR Antonio Callaway. http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/21170503/suspended-florida-gators-players-get-pre-trial-intervention Yes they did what they did..... but it pisses me off a little when you know that boys are being being boys all over the country and yet at UF people like Cam Newton, Will Grier and these guys just keep getting the iron fist. Maybe everywhere else in the country they are all just good solid law abiding citizens and only when they arrive in Gainesville do they turn evil? Man... how can Gainesville corrupt these guys so?
Boy are being boys? They stole a credit card and then used it to steal goods. They are getting PTI because they must not have any serious priors and the jails are full but don't make these guys out to victims.
It was a one time use of the stolen card perpetrated by some immaturity I'm sure. This kind of thing has never been acceptable nor should it ever be but I'll guarantee you the University of Florida isn't the only place where immaturity goes astray.
No way should you defend this behavior. This is not just immaturity. It is not boys being boys. It is criminal. It shouldn't be defended anywhere else it happens either. Yes it goes on elsewhere. I get very disheartened when something similar occurs by players on my teams. Yes it has happened. I'm glad they are getting cut a break if it was a one-time incident and they are truly remorseful. Perhaps peer pressure played a role. I do note that two players are being investigated for MULTIPLE thefts using MULTIPLE credit cards. I'm not buying your "only in Gainesville" martyr card.
"I'm glad they are getting cut a break if it was a one-time incident and they are truly remorseful. Perhaps peer pressure played a role. I dove hunted on posted property once while in school at Florida and wound up spending several hours in the Marion County jail in a general population which was highly unpleasant. It was a lesson taught for sure.... but it didn't affect my reputation or ability to earn a future living for life and as a grown adult I would never have made such a foolish decision. I agree with you on the multiple card use guys who obviously were up to a more sinister pattern. Their lesson taught is bound to be a little more harsh. In the meantime millions of UF fans have been paying for these kid's mistakes and the head coach's seat is getting a little hot with a season ruined. Now maybe that's justice and deserved.... but as you say ******** like that goes on elsewhere you can be certain of that. Gainesville isn't a magnet for bad kids who make mistakes.... it happens all over the country and has been going on for the history of college football in the best and most storied of programs.
Dave, I can't figure out your point if you have one. Are you saying that the athletes are being punished unfairly? that they're being targeted when it's done elsewhere? What about the elsewhere? How does that have anything to to with the FL situation? that they should be allowed to play to alleviate the suffering of the FL fans? that they should be dealt with gently because "boys will be boys"? How do you justify drawing a line of resemblance between hunting on posted property and stealing (multiple times)?
Stealing once Sid.... that's why ultimately they have a chance to have the charges dismissed. I am just a little frustrated that the GPD does it's job without favoritism.... without special treatment and with the iron hand of the law when it comes to anything to do with University of Florida athletes. And I wonder if that is true on other campuses in other university towns. All the kids who make immature mistakes didn't just gravitate to Florida. All of the pure god fearing kids must go to Tuscaloosa cause you never ever seem to hear of any getting in any sort of trouble. Who is running the TPD? Barney Fife?
So.....you're proposing special treatment? I know that doesn't happen in South Bend and probably doesn't happen anywhere else associated with Skybox members. I'm not going to bother saying anything else. I would say only something similar to what I once said to my young children when trying to teach them the concepts of responsibility and accountability.
PTI is handed out to first offenders to keep the jails from exploding and to offer the offenders a second chance so to speak. It is usuallydone on a case by case basis and depends on the crime and other factors. I have no problems with this if these serve out their probations to the letter and stay out of trouble. But they are criminals, make no mistake.

Sorry I'm with Stu and the others on this, those guys are getting off easy. It's been a tough year for McElwain and the Gators with off the field stuff and the way the season seems to be trending. I've experienced that at both Texas and Notre Dame where players do things that they shouldn't and get caught and it hurts their teammates and the team every bit as much as it hurts them. Bobby Bowden used to justify his leniency towards football players with he didn't want to punish a whole team for the transgressions of one guy. But I don't think anybody but him bought that. If the Gators have higher standards and accountabilty than their rivals, good for them.
MCG, the Tuscaloosa PD just a few weeks issued a DUI to one of our starters He was asleep in a parking lot so “Barney” cited him for DUI because the keys were in the ignition so take off the hair shirt a man up!
Hey they did that to Willie Nelson and Tiger Woods being asleep in your car or more correctly passed out in your car on the side of the road still gets you in trouble!
Terry, yeah credit card theft is pretty major and would be hard for any PD to overlook. I'm not sure what he wants the Gainesville police to do?
Well cudos to the GPD.... they always get their man. Auburn owes it's only modern day national championship to the GPD because Cam Newton ran afoul of the GPD while Auburn said welcome aboard Cam. Kinda of ensured Urban Meyer's exit at UF as well.
Dave, this was way more serious than you are saying. Use of multiple stolen credit card numbers and they are very lucky to get off with what they are getting. I am not going to defend it one bit and I hope for their sake they live up to the terms of the agreement. The Police did their job.
