Largest Hurricane ever in the Atlantic Basin bearing down on our ass. Tampa Boat show this weekend cancelled. Hard to figure out where to go.... depends on the path. Jax or Jupiter are the choices. Everyone is a little bit jittery over this one. I live about three nautical miles from the Gulf of Mexico across the street from the St. Joseph Sound.
My home is in Hobe Sound, right to the north of Jupiter. Not good. I think it may track to the south though. Who knows.
Nothing against you folks on the East coast esp Florida, but we've had enough with Harvey...No Mas. Stay safe.
Anxiety is the key word for the 21 million people in Florida today. At home we have the generator ready, food purchased, vehicles fueled up and family planning to come and stay. At work we have a 30 kilowatt diesel generator ready to go, 5,000 gal of diesel, 1,000 gal of gas and our shop equipped with ice machine. I learned from hurricane Charlie, Jean and Francis that post storm damage can be severe, expect zero help from anyone and to take care of my employees, their families, my family and friends in need. In the case of hurricane Andrew power was out for 12 weeks, in Charlie it was 2 weeks...Be prepared
220mph?! Holy Shite! Ralph, I'd tell you guys to get in a bunker, but it would need to be about 10 ft off the ground and that doesn't sound so smart with winds half that strong. That's tornado strength!!
Not knowing exactly what route it will take... Get the flock out!!!!! Although there are other areas closer, Our doors are always open to Skyboxers in need of a dry place.
LOL.....go from an area about to be hit to one that was hit and hit hard, but I do have power and dry carpets!
It's not the forecast folks are hoping for, gotta say if you can stay on the west side of the eye it's a welcomed sight... Different thing on this storm is the lack of gas for folks, from Gainesville south gas stations are empty. My procrastinator son waited until this morning and had 81 vehicles in front of him but luckily got fuel, premium gas but fuel...By the way officials are now saying hunker down and stay in your county as fuel demand is outstripping demand, in essence we don't have enough gas folks for you to travel across the state.. It may get exciting come Sunday/Monday with this storm for not only us but Georgia and South Carolina The citrus grower in me says if you like grapefruit buy it now because they are all fixing to be on the ground, this storm may eliminate this years crop... By the way those hurricane forecast lines run through some of that million dollar per square foot real estate folks are fond of talking about
They are proactively dumping Okeechobee again into both the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchie river basins. This fouls both waterways, creates that awful algae , turns the clear water to a coffee brown and slaughters the fish.
George I know they have been actively holding the water in Okeechobee at dangerous levels all summer to limit the runoff. But with this hurricane and the sorry state the dike surrounding the lake is in they have no choice but to release the extraordinarily high lake levels. Nobody wants a repeat of what you and others experienced on both coast with the water contamination. But for those living in the towns of Moore Haven, Belle Glade, Clewiston and others this reduction in the lake level can't come fast enough. Hopefully the water quality is unaffected and we never see that happen again... Changing gears are you riding out the storm at your house or did you decide to get to higher ground?
Good luck Ralph, we'll be keeping you folks in our prayers. I'm sure comms will become sporadic as the storm hits. Check in with us when you can so we know you're ok. I'd say that lake water may not be much of a problem when its diluted by a foot or more of storm run off...
My fishing buddy who lives in Jensen Beach will be sick about this as he fishes those waters over in that area. I am still trying to figure this thing out. If it were to slide west and come up the Gulf side I am going to have to haul ass up US 19 with the family. I can see St. Joseph Sound across the street when I get to the end of my driveway.
Ralphie, I'm up in New Jersey. My place is shuttered down; nothing more I can do for it. I have a covertib le parked down there that I am mentally saying goodbye to already. I hope I am pleasantly surprised. My brother in law is riding it out in Port Salerno ( Stuart ) and will be watching his 44' Riviera soport fisherman ride it out at the dock.
We're planning on riding it out too. If it skirts the coast we'll only get 85 mph winds. If it travels up the gut we'll get the stronger part of the storm but it will probably lose some of its punch when it gets over land.
Saw lots of folks playing today. Of course it's the calm before the storm. The question is how much rain will be get and how long will the courses be shut down afterward.
Sorry I missed ya Gip, you guys hang tough....I was hoping you didn't have any worries but the new track may gut the state so we may all feel the pinch
