Well... I took a look at what I was paying for internet and TV these days and about threw up. After all the fees and taxes it was $200/month When I signed on with AT&T in 2014, I was getting 100 more channels, but it was costing me $99/month. They slowly but surely tacked on here and there while forcing me out of my original channel deal. So finally, I've had enuf!!! I've changed over to Spectrum internet, for $45/month with very fast speeds (and two bands so the kids don't suck it all up!) and today I activated Sling TV which streams through the net connection. I'm trying the max version that allows multiple TVs and gives all their channels. $40/month. I could add the extra sports pack to get the SEC channel for $10, but I'm trying to SAVE, so I'll just watch it on the PC if I need to. Something I really like: I can change my options any time without dealing with stupid sales reps. (ATT was begging me to stay!) Just go to the website and change whatever you want.
Your my hero as we keep talking about dropping our cable, our cost is the exact same thing touching $200 and for what as I'm the only one who watches TV and it's local news and some sports. I just checked and unfortunately we don't have spectrum in our area, it's century link (poor service and speeds), Comcast which is what we have and Verizon Mi-Fi internet but it's slower speeds and our metal roof kills the signal. Maybe eventually we can make the change but meanwhile I'll have to enjoy your savings....Nice move..
Sorry to hear it Ralph, but that's the price you pay living out in the peaceful country. For the record... I wish I had that problem! If there's ONE good thing about city life (and there are very FEW) it's you have a number of choices for many services. The one that I like most is electric. I can choose from about 15 providers, and shop their prices for a huge number of contract lengths. I have only kept the same company for sequential contracts ONCE in the last 5 years. They make NO effort to keep current customers, only gain new. SO... they make their "come to me" prices great, then offer you crap at renewal time. It's SO easy to change... once you choose a new provider you get on their website, select a date and POOF! Done. We have smart meters, so they don't even have to come to the house. And... they notify your old provider that you are gone... you never have to deal with them.
We don't really have much choice in Houston. Comcast or ATT Uverse/Directv is pretty much the game. No Verizon Fios, No Google Fiber, No competition. I keep reading about gigabit internet but it's not happening in my area, I read that where it's available it's not cheap. So right now I'm not really interested in going with Sling TV or Roku Stick or AppleTV. So I'm gagging that cost down like Ralph.
Speaking of Cable TV, I finished the 1st season of "The Son" it was pretty darn good. I'd recommend it. Texas Oil, Cattle, Mexicans, dirty politics, adultery, etc...it's got it all. Starting Season 3 of Fargo...episode 1 seems to set it up for another good one. Finished Season 3 of Better Call Saul, which is the prequel series to Breaking Bad, not sure they can go further than Season 4 next before they catch up to where Breaking bad begins. They have done a good job of slowly working in the characters from Breaking Bad with the prequel story line of how Saul Goodman became Saul Goodman.
We had bad weather here in Houston last Sat so I binge watched my way through Fargo season 3. I really liked it a lot, at first I thought Nikki was a minor character, but then she was a major character and as it moved through the season it became her and VM. I liked the way it ended, and while I'd agree with Stu that the finale was sort of a letdown, it did tie up things . I thought Emmett getting the bullet to the head while looking in the fridge was poetic justice, delayed but justice. The only thing was the last scene, I wanted to know who was walking through the door...the Homeland guys or the Big Wig who would walk VM out the door.
I'm going to go in cold turkey and cut the cable, let the chips fall and see what happens. As I mentioned above I pretty much only watch local news 5 days a week then at random pick up a movie during the weekend at times. Heck regardless, you guys need to realize that when I say local news that's Tampa or Ft.Myers. If I hopped into one of our vehicles and drove as fast as I could it's 85-100 miles away from our house to the station so local news is really not local at all as there is no news outlets in the heartland of Florida. Nothing like having 100,000 people in your county and all the news comes from three counties away, but then again we are forced fed what happens in NY, LA and Chicago so it's more of the same but with a Florida twist but rarely pertinent to what is going on around me. My hope is to pick up Cane games on ESPN 3 and throw them up on the screen, possibly put up an amplified HD antenna for local channels and of course keep the high speed internet....
Welcome to the club Ralph! I sure haven't missed it. I don't even watch the local "crime" news as my grandparents called it. Nothing I want to hear comes from them...
I'm playing with sling tv at the moment, mainly going on what Tom has shared for years with us all. I need to pickup either chromecast or roku or something else to throw it off my device. If this works I'll save $165 per month, working it off my hotspot on my cell phone.
