I think we're all pretty much in agreement on the rule, but I found this article and thought it added clarity. Maybe all the officials should read this short item... I am totally in agreement with this view. Targeting
I don't think the SEC adding another level of review has helped much. On another question, what happens if a ball carrier lowers his head and initiates helmet to helmet contact? Can a ball carrier be called for targeting?
That's a fair question kp, and you are not the first fan I've heard bring it up. As far as I know it's never been answered by the NCAA, and I doubt it will. All I've seen is defensive players ever called.
Scott, I know I've never seen it called either. I was just wondering. Targeting gets called inconsistently. According to the rule as Scott linked above the Alabama player should have been called for targeting also. I know Alabama has been called for holding all year. We have had at least one TD called back because of a holding call so far this year that I can remember off the top of my head. Our right tackle has been called for several holding penalties. With our pass rushers, I have also seen a lot of non-calls as well as well as several jersey pulls on our WR's. Of course I seem to notice the non-calls on the other team, I don't seem to see the non-calls on Alabama.
