I didn't see it but apparently Kirk Herbstriet was pretty critical of Texas, it's alumni, and it's fans. Said something to the effect "Who would want to coach there". Not sure what set him off though. There is certainly a lot of talk that Charlie Strong will be fired and some want him fired now. Maybe Herby thinks Charlie is getting a raw deal. Texas certainly has it's share of power brokers who are big donors, Red McCoombs who has owned the Spurs and the Vikings in his career was pretty outspoken that he didn't want Strong in the first place and while not exactly saying he should be fired all but implied that in a recent interview. Maybe that's what has Herby upset, forces outside the program having too much influence in his opinion.
I can't speak for Herbie but I can say that I share his perspective. There were way too many influential people in that program who never backed Strong. What's the old saying, 'too many chiefs, not enough Indians?'
As always not everything goes to form. I thought Miami would handle FSU at home and I am still surprised that they didn't. I thought Stanford would rebound against Wash State, but they didn't. I thought OU could score 60 on the Texas defense, it's amazing that they didn't they put up 700 yds on us. But apparently OU doesn't have a very good defense either so they win in a shootout. I thought Houston would cruise against the Navy, Navy just lost to Air Force and hardly had any offense. They lost their record setting QB Keenan Reynolds to graduation, and the new starter went down. So this looked to me like a perfect storm for the Cougars to just blow away the Navy. They beat them last year with Reynolds. Crushing blow to the hopes of Cougar fans for a spot in the Playoffs. I thought A&M would be the Vols, but didn't figure it would be the crazy game that it turned out to be. I didn't know what to expect in the ND/NCState game and nobody else did either, apparently Brian Kelly was thinking sunny day offense would work here. Va. Tech is looking like a team that is on the rise with their new coach Justin Fuente. Colorado gave USC a really good game, didn't see it but the score was close. New hot coach is not Tom Herman, but P. J. Flecke of Western Michigan. He has them in the top 25 for the first time in their history. He'll be coaching in the next level up in 2017 you can bet on that.
Not the first time powerful donors/alums have failed to support a coach...I always thought that Rodriquez at Michigan had that problem, and also Earl Bruce. But I am certainly not an insider in either case so who knows?
It's probably the Cane board I surf but losing to the Noles the other night by one point has pushed radical Cane fans to the point of no return. For some reason the younglings have decided that a Miami victory was written in blood even though the we supposedly do not have the talent to keep the previous head coach. Imagine this crowds comments when we lost to UF in 83 to Florida in the first game of the year that eventually lead to our first championship. I am tired by fans of all teams that expect instantaneous results, heck Saban is doing it so it must be easy to achieve and lets change our coach until it happens... If its 7 years its under scrutiny, but relax and stop being so expectant of a Championship each and every year...
Ralph, Do not feel too bad, Ohio State fans think that winning by only 21 points was a disaster, Out QB did not have a great passing game, but we won because of his 26 rushes for 137 yards and a terrific defense. Go figure!
