yall are missing what I'm saying. I think the ACC may have 2 candidates this year, and no one will object, but it is still early. 8)
That was quite a weekend of college football. Clemson/Louisville was the game of the day because it was 2 top 10 teams and it didn't disappoint. It looks like both of these teams could run the table from here on out and give the ACC a potential of 2 teams in the playoffs. kp's point that nobody seems to be upset with that senario, where as in the past everybody was "NO 2nd SEC team". Oh well. UM/Wisc ...this was described as "old school" football. Certainly some rock'em sock'em defense. But I do wonder if either team has a really good QB in the same class as Watson or Jackson? Both QB's seemed more game manager types. Where as Ohio State has a QB in the same class as Watson and Jackson. Herby commented during the Clemson game how Ohio State really is more together as a team and playing so well that they are the class of the B1G. Both Wisc and Michigan will test them...maybe. Wash/Stanford...did anybody see that coming? I sure didn't. Washington looked fast and mean and their young QB looked extremely good. Tenn/UGA and Texas A&M/SCar....I thought both those games would be over at halftime. Not so, Tenn and A&M up next in college station. That excessive celebration penalty really cost UGA the big upset. I'm all for kids having fun and all, but that has to hurt. Also I have to say IMHO that rule sucks, no way should a team lose a game because some ref thinks they were too happy and expressed it. I'll accept Scotts explanation that A&M a little dinged up and maybe not motivated. They better be ready this coming Sat because Tenn is starting to remind of Auburn the year they won it all, everything seems to be going their way....balls are bouncing right for them. Anybody talking about Miami? I don't hear much about the undefeated Hurricanes. FSU ...ha ha ha ha...it's always good to Jimbo and Seminoles get in the chops!! UNC the only school that exceeds FSU in cheating with their athletes. Texas going the wrong direction. OU going the right direction....are we set up for another route 66 by OU on Texas? Notre Dame...thank goodness Syracuse is bad! Wash State...I couldn't stay up late enough to watch that game, but not surprised at all by the outcome. Mark Helftrich is running out of Chip Kelly guys to bail him out. He's done, Phil Knight isn't paying for what's going on in Oregon.
Maybe the worst targeting call ever.....no way the MSU guy even came close to hitting the IU kid in the head. I hope the B1G supervisor of officals fires these guys and apologizes to McDowell. Bad Targeting Call
For the record, I have a beef with the '2 teams from a conference' because it's waaaaaaay too early to tell and there's a lot of football yet to be played. I just figured that you guys get tired of my broken record.
I think it's unlikely that we get 2 teams from a single conference. Esp if Washington continues it's excellence. I think the B12 is out this year, although Baylor is still undefeated, but I can't imagine they will stay that way.
I watched the game and saw the call. I reacted like you did. The explanation given by the TV ref is that targeting does not necessarily have to be to the head. It's leading with the crown of the helmet on a defenseless player (He might have said above the waist but I don't recall). A QB who has just released a pass is defenseless. Like it or not, by that definition, the call was warranted. The mistake made by the MSU player was tackling with his head down, which is fundamentally wrong and potentially as injurious to the defensive player as to the person he tackles.
Corey, that's why I said "but it is still early". A lot of things will change between now and December.
Agree with Sid. There are two parts to the rule. Forcibly striking a player in the neck and head (does not have be with the helmet), or striking with the crown of the helmet. (I think this replaced spearing). The kid clearly lowers his helmet and leads with the top of his head. If he just hits with his face up, he's clean.
