September 2007..... the Big House..... top ten ranked Michigan steps on their johnson all day and then chokes at the end of the most exciting upset I have ever had the pleasure of listening live on the radio to. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOF6-GScIGo Wow.... couldn't believe it. Watch out Vols!!!
I've heard that App State is not a complete push over and while maybe not the App State team that pulled off that upset, Vols better not overlook them or they could be in a battle. My guess, with a Sr. QB leading them...The Vols will not come out flat and let App State hang around.
I agree that the Vols should be jacked up and ready. The real key to the Michigan loss was that AppSt had a very talented mobile Qb who gave the Michigan defense fits that day. I don't know anything about this year's edition of AppSt..... But it sure is fun to remember such a monumental upset. Jim Brandstatter the Michigan radio play-by-play that day and ex-Bo disciple was beside himeself with football shock and grief.
Would have loved to hear Brandstatters call of the famous Harry Oliver FG to beat Michigan in 1980 as the clock ran out in Notre Dame Stadium. It was a long FG and it was into the wind.
Terry, This link has the radio feed of the Oliver call by ND's Tony Roberts and M's Bob Ufer. I think that kick took several years away from poor Bob's lifespan. http://www.uhnd.com/former-players-articles/rip-harry-oliver/
Thanks Bobda...took Ufer 3 times to get the final score right, so it's safe to say he might have been a little heart broken.
Surely they jest..... https://www.seccountry.com/tennessee/5-questions-with-appalachian-state-football-writers-neyland-stadium-wont-intimidate Hard to beat this call by Ufer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDW1tUtEZkQ
 Appalachian State should have won this game, but I'm being quiet too until we see some more of these openers. Both Diane and I picked USC to beat Alabama and UCLA to beat Texas A&M. Notre Dame appears wobbly going down to Texas and lots of crazy things could still happen...
Helluva game to start the year!! You can't sugarcoat the lousy job done by the Vol offensive line. The DLs of UF, Ga and Bama will eat those guys alive if they don't improve greatly.
App State had the win in its grasp but let it slip away. Missed PAT, missed FG, two Vol fumbles that bounced off the leg of an App State player, the App St QB running out of bounds when time expired with their team in FG position. Two Tenn assistants coached at Michigan when App State beat us and I am pretty sure the words --Oh Jesus Not Again! --were going through their minds. Surprised that Tenn did not the ball downfield more to loosen up AS's defense.
These first games are always scary. Alabama/USC, LSU/Wisc, and ND/UT should be fun. I'm hoping Auburn/Clemson is fun, but in a different way.
Vandy-SC was also a game that came down to the wire....good finish. Coach Will was pretty ectastic to see his boring brand of Willyball eek another one out.
Vandy-SCAR was a painfully boring game to watch. I only made it through three quarters (when there wasn't anything to watch on the Tenn-Appy game) and finally decided I really didn't care which of the feathers landed on top. Oregon St.-Minn was a better contest.
App State recruits this area hard. One of the DBs playing for App State last night is a good friend of my son. Needless to say, they really did well to improve their brand recruiting last night.
I caught the beginning of the SCAR/Vandy game on XM radio on my way to Austin....talk about a rough first few plays for SCAR...started with the kickoff which the return went sideways, the radio crew didn't understand how the refs declared that the SCAR returner never left the endzone, when their replay showed he got one foot outside and never got his knee to the turf when he decided to go back in and the Vandy kid hit him causing a fumble. They thought it should have been Vandy ball at the 4. Then on the first play SCAR jumped off sides or something...just not the type of start that Muschamp envisioned I'm sure.
I tried to explain that opening ko to scott, and never did understand why mason didn't ask for a review. I also used that as an example of how bad rod gilmore is.
